To choose one, start with a nearby location or the app’s “Recommended for you” option, then compare nearby choices if performance matters. The right server type depends on whether you need a shared or exclusive IP, a two-server route, or help connecting on a restricted network.
How many servers and locations does Surfshark have?
Surfshark currently advertises 4,500+ servers in 100 countries on its server page and repeats that figure in its support materials. This is Surfshark’s own claim, not an independently audited count, and it does not establish speed, privacy, or availability at a particular moment. The provider’s searchable server list is the place to check current country and city options; coverage and features can change.
Many countries offer a choice of cities. Surfshark’s live list also marks P2P availability by location, so check it rather than assuming every location supports the same use. Follow applicable laws and service terms when using P2P.
How do I choose a Surfshark server?
Surfshark recommends considering both distance and current server load. A nearby location is a sensible first choice when performance matters, but no country is universally fastest: your route, network conditions, and the server’s current load can affect the result.

- Start nearby. In the Surfshark app, open the locations list and choose a nearby country or a city if one is available.
- Try “Recommended for you.” Surfshark presents this as a starting option in the app; it is a recommendation, not a guarantee of the fastest connection.
- Compare a few nearby locations if needed. Connect to each and see which works best for your connection and the service you are using.
- Choose for your actual need. Use a location that offers the relevant city or P2P availability, or select a special server/IP option if you need one of those features.
A VPN location changes the IP address presented to websites and services; it does not move you or your device to that country. A location’s apparent country and the physical location of its hardware can also differ.
What is the difference between physical and virtual server locations?
A physical location refers to where the server hardware is located. With a virtual location, the IP address is associated with one country even though the physical server is in another. Surfshark says it uses virtual locations where establishing physical infrastructure is difficult and describes them as functionally identical from the customer’s perspective. The distinction concerns the IP’s apparent location; it does not mean the underlying hardware is physically in the advertised country.

Which Surfshark server type should I use?
Standard locations, Static IP, Dedicated IP, Dynamic MultiHop, and NoBorders solve different problems. The key distinctions are whether an IP is shared or exclusive, whether traffic uses one or two VPN servers, and whether you need a location option intended for restricted networks.

Static IP is not the same as Dedicated IP
A Static IP location uses an IP shared by users connected to that location. “Static” describes the address behavior while connected, not exclusive ownership: Surfshark says reconnecting may assign another standard IP. A Dedicated IP, by contrast, is assigned to one user. That consistency has a privacy tradeoff because Surfshark cautions that a dedicated address can be more closely associated with the account and may provide less privacy than a shared IP.

Check Dedicated IP setup limits before choosing
Surfshark Support says an account can purchase only one Dedicated IP, and its location cannot be changed after selection. Choose the location carefully before completing setup.

Surfshark states: “All our servers are RAM-only, which means they automatically erase all data with every reboot.” It also says its entire server network supports WireGuard, IKEv2, and OpenVPN. These are provider statements; they do not amount to independent live testing or validation of every server’s configuration.

For current locations and location-specific details, use Surfshark’s live server list. The advertised count and country coverage are useful orientation, but your choice should be guided by distance, load, and the specific IP or routing behavior you need.
