It is a protocol ecosystem and network—not a cloud storage company—and a content identifier does not guarantee that anyone is currently storing or serving the content.
What does IPFS stand for?
IPFS stands for InterPlanetary File System. The name refers to an open set of protocols and implementations, as well as the network formed by participating nodes. In practical terms, IPFS is a way to identify and exchange data using content-derived addresses across a peer-to-peer network. The IPFS documentation describes the system in those terms.
How does IPFS work?
IPFS divides data into blocks and organizes them so a node can identify the content, locate nodes that can provide it, and retrieve the needed blocks. Its documented components include content identifiers (CIDs), IPLD for linking data, distributed hash table (DHT) routing, Bitswap for exchanging blocks, libp2p networking, and HTTP gateways. These parts work together; IPFS is not one application or a single server.
Content identifiers address data, not a location
A CID is derived from content and encodes details such as its cryptographic hash and codec. Unlike a conventional URL that points to a location, a CID identifies particular content without specifying where a copy is stored. The same underlying file can have different CIDs if it is chunked or laid out differently, or encoded using a different codec or version. A change to the content also produces a different CID. See the IPFS guide to content addressing.

Nodes find and transfer available blocks
When a node requests content, IPFS mechanisms help it discover providers and fetch the blocks. A CID is therefore useful for asking for particular content, but it is not a storage location or a promise of availability. Retrieval depends on a node or service retaining the data and responding to the request. The IPFS explanation of how the system works covers the main components.
Is IPFS cloud storage?
No. IPFS itself is a protocol and network, not a cloud storage provider that takes responsibility for keeping your files. Nodes and compatible services can store, retain, and serve data using IPFS, but that responsibility belongs to those participants or providers. If ongoing access matters, arrange for a node or service to retain and serve the content; merely knowing its CID is not enough. The distinction is explained in the IPFS overview.

What is the difference between a CID and IPNS?
A CID is an immutable address for specific content: if the content changes, the CID changes. IPNS provides a mutable, signed name that can point to an IPFS path, allowing a publisher to update what that name resolves to without changing the rule that each underlying CID identifies particular content. Use a CID when a reference should identify exact content; use an IPNS name when a stable name needs to point to updated content. Details are in the IPNS documentation.
Can you access IPFS through a web browser?
Yes. An IPFS HTTP gateway lets an ordinary HTTP client request IPFS content without implementing IPFS networking and retrieval itself. Gateways differ in how they retrieve and verify content, so they should not be treated as interchangeable or assumed to provide identical trust guarantees. The gateway documentation describes trusted and trustless gateway approaches.

Is IPFS private?
No. IPFS is a public network: CIDs and information about participating nodes and the content they provide may be publicly visible. Content addressing verifies which content is being requested; it does not restrict who can access it. Encrypt content separately if confidentiality is required. The IPFS privacy and encryption guide explains the distinction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can someone get started with IPFS?
The official IPFS documentation points newcomers to several software entry points: IPFS Desktop, a graphical interface; Kubo, a command-line implementation; and IPFS Companion, a browser extension. These are alternative ways to work with the ecosystem, not hardware requirements or storage guarantees.
