Hexzie (also called HexTelegram) is a Telegram AI assistant project designed to do more than generate chat replies: its application can let a model request tools, run the corresponding code, and return the results for the model to use. The project author describes it as actively in development, so its reported features should be treated as a build report—not a verified or stable product specification.

How can a Telegram AI agent use tools?

Telegram provides the chat interface, but it does not run the assistant’s logic. A backend receives Telegram updates, builds the conversation context, calls a model API, and sends replies through Telegram’s Bot API. Hexzie’s author describes using Node.js and Telegraf for Telegram handling and orchestration, with a separate Go runner for lower-level system and web tools. That is this project’s design choice, not a requirement for Telegram agents.

The general tool-calling mechanism is application-managed. OpenAI’s function-calling guide describes a model receiving tool definitions and returning a tool request; the application executes the corresponding code and sends the result back so the model can continue. The model does not directly execute arbitrary commands on the host. The application defines which tools exist and what their implementations are.

Hexzie’s reported request loop

  1. A Telegram message arrives at the Telegraf bot.
  2. The application handles authentication and builds conversation context, then sends the model a request with available tool definitions.
  3. If the model requests a tool, the application dispatches it to a Go tool runner or a Telegram-specific handler.
  4. The application adds the tool result to the conversation and asks the model to continue. It may respond to the user or request another tool.
  5. The bot sends the final response through Telegram.

The project article says its agent permits up to eight rounds of this loop. That is a reported project configuration, not a limit imposed on all agents or a measure of performance.

  • System and files: shell execution, file reading, writing and listing, plus time, calculator and system-information tools.
  • Web: search, fetching pages, website checks and screenshots.
  • Telegram: sending, editing, deleting, forwarding and pinning messages, as well as sending documents or photos.

The article also reports streaming progress messages, recent per-chat history with summaries for older turns, cancellation of stale requests, API endpoint failover, and group-chat triggers. These are author-reported project details; they have not been independently verified.

What does Telegram privacy mode mean for groups?

A bot does not automatically receive every message in every group. Telegram’s Bot FAQ explains that privacy-enabled bots receive relevant messages under Telegram’s group privacy rules. Group administrators and bots with privacy mode disabled receive a broader set of messages, subject to exceptions.

There are two separate filters: Telegram determines which updates reach the bot, and the application decides which received messages should start the agent. Hexzie’s author says its group triggers include commands, prefixes, mentions and replies. Those triggers cannot make the bot act on messages Telegram did not deliver.

What does a tool-enabled Telegram bot need?

Telegram bot creation starts with @BotFather, which issues a bot token. Telegram warns that anyone who obtains the token can control the bot. The Bot API accepts HTTPS requests in the form https://api.telegram.org/bot<token>/METHOD_NAME; the Telegram FAQ explains that bot logic must connect to a backend server through the API.

  • A backend process to receive updates and run application logic.
  • A Telegram bot token and whatever model API credentials the application uses.
  • Tool implementations in application code, with explicit decisions about what data and actions each one can access.
  • A way to deliver updates, such as polling or webhooks. The cited project account does not establish an empirically superior choice between them.

Keep bot and model credentials out of public code and logs. Telegram specifically warns that the bot token grants control of the bot; no claim about Hexzie’s credential-storage implementation is established here.

How risky are shell and filesystem tools?

Shell and file tools can turn a chat interface into a route to consequential actions on the backend host. The project author says these tools can access files from / by default and calls the capability, “That is extremely powerful and also extremely dangerous.”

The article reports user-ID allowlisting, owner-only management commands, and optional controls including a configured working directory, execution timeout, output-length limit and blocked command patterns. It also says only the owner and explicitly allowed users can use the bot. These are descriptions of project controls, not evidence that the bot is securely sandboxed or resistant to compromise. No independent security audit, threat model or test results are established.

For a bot with host access, treat tool permissions as a design decision, not a convenience toggle. Prefer narrowly scoped operations over broad shell access where possible, restrict who can invoke tools, and consider what a compromised bot credential or backend process could reach. The available project account does not provide enough evidence to certify its protections.

Which architecture choices are still yours?

Hexzie’s stack illustrates one possible design, not a tested winner. Node.js with Telegraf handles the Telegram side in the author’s implementation, while a Go runner handles selected tools. A developer could instead keep tool implementations in one process or choose another Telegram runtime; the cited material does not compare these approaches empirically.

The meaningful design questions are where tool code runs, how much host access it has, how updates reach the backend, and which received messages are permitted to trigger actions. Choose based on operational constraints and the consequences of each tool—not on an unsupported claim that one stack is universally best.
