WhatsApp’s optional parental controls let a linked parent or guardian manage certain teen privacy settings and review selected account-activity updates. They do not let a parent read the teen’s end-to-end encrypted personal messages or listen to calls. Availability is rolling out gradually and may vary by region.
What parents can see through teen controls
To use the controls, a parent or guardian must link their WhatsApp account to the teen’s account. Once linked, the parent can review selected activity updates and configure notifications for some activities. WhatsApp lists these teen-account alerts:
- A contact was added.
- A group was created or joined.
- The teen’s name or profile picture changed.
These are account-event alerts, not message previews, chat transcripts, or call recordings. The teen-specific alert list should not be confused with the different alerts documented for parent-managed accounts for younger children.
What parents can manage
On the teen’s phone, open WhatsApp > Settings > Parental controls, enter the parent PIN, and open Privacy settings. The available choices depend on the setting and can include Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except…, Only share with…, or Nobody.

Teens can view and change their privacy settings themselves. If a teen tries to change a setting to a less restrictive option, parent approval using the parent PIN is required. The controls are optional, and the exact settings may depend on the app version and rollout availability.
Can parents read WhatsApp messages or listen to calls?
No—not through these parental controls. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted. In its Help Center article “How to review activity alerts for teens with parental controls,” WhatsApp states: “No one outside of the chat, not even the parent or WhatsApp, can read, listen to, or share them.” Linking a parent’s account does not grant access to chat contents.

Teen controls and parent-managed accounts are different
WhatsApp describes two distinct experiences. Teen parental controls apply to a teen account linked to a parent or guardian’s account. Parent-managed accounts are a separate experience for children below WhatsApp’s minimum age, or below a higher minimum that applies in some countries or regions.

WhatsApp says its age-verification feature is also gradually rolling out. Check the current Help Center and the app for age eligibility and local requirements.

Linked devices are an account-security issue
WhatsApp’s linked-device guidance says messages, media, and calls remain end-to-end encrypted on linked devices, which connect independently. It recommends reviewing linked devices and logging out of any session you do not recognize. This is an account-security check, not a documented way for parents to monitor a teen’s conversations. WhatsApp also says it cannot provide information about who accessed an account or the time and location of access.

WhatsApp is rolling out teen parental controls gradually, so the feature may not yet appear in every region or app. Check the current WhatsApp app and Help Center for availability, labels, and the alert categories supported for the specific account experience.
