Audio on demand is audio you can choose and play at a time that suits you, instead of having to tune in when it is broadcast. Music streaming, podcasts, audiobooks, and radio programmes available for catch-up can all be on-demand audio. You may stream it as you listen or download it for later.
What does audio on demand mean?
The defining feature is control over when to listen: the content is available for you to select and play, rather than being heard only at a broadcaster’s scheduled time. On-demand services can also offer personalisation, sharing, and a wider range of content than a fixed set of live radio stations, according to the UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport’s Digital radio and audio review.
Audio on demand is a broad category, not a single file type or app. It includes music catalogues, episodic programmes, audiobooks, and replays of radio broadcasts. The UK government review describes on-demand music and podcasts alongside live radio in the wider audio ecosystem.
How is it different from live radio?
| Question | Live or scheduled radio | Audio on demand |
|---|---|---|
| When do you listen? | When the station broadcasts the programme. | When you choose to play available content. |
| What determines the content? | The station’s schedule. | Your selection from the content available through the service. |
| Can the content be a radio programme? | Yes, as it is broadcast. | Yes, if it is made available for catch-up listening. |
The difference is about access and timing, not necessarily who made the programme. A broadcast can become on-demand audio when a station makes it available to replay later.

Are podcasts the same as audio on demand?
No. Podcasting is one way to distribute on-demand audio, not a synonym for the whole category. Music streams, audiobooks, and catch-up radio can be on demand without being podcasts.
The Reuters Institute describes podcasts as episodic digital audio files and distinguishes native podcasts, made for podcast distribution, from catch-up radio, originally broadcast and then made available to replay. The boundary is not always clear: some podcasts originate as radio programmes, and listeners may not distinguish between the two. The Institute’s 2019 report on podcasting also describes RSS feeds and listening apps as distribution routes.

Does on-demand audio have to be streamed?
No. Streaming and downloading describe how audio is delivered or accessed; they do not define whether it is on demand. You can select a track or programme and stream it while it plays, or download it to listen later. The IAB South Africa’s 2022 Audio Toolkit describes on-demand files as accessible at any time, whether downloaded in full or delivered in portions during playback. That is a useful delivery distinction in the toolkit’s context, not a universal definition that replaces everyday usage.
Where can you listen?
Access depends on the service and the content. Common routes include a music or broadcaster app, a podcast app or RSS feed, a web player, or a connected device such as a smartphone or smart speaker. The UK government review names smartphones and smart speakers as routes to online audio. Some services offer downloads; others require an internet connection to play content.

How common is on-demand listening?
Historical UK figures illustrate that on-demand formats sit alongside live radio rather than replacing it. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport’s review reports that in Spring 2020, live radio represented 72% of all audio listening, on-demand music streaming 14%, podcasts 4%, and other audio formats 10%. Among UK listeners aged 15–24 in that period, on-demand music streaming accounted for 44% of listening time and podcasts for a further 5%. These are Spring 2020 figures reported in the review’s 2022 update, not current or global estimates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A quick way to identify audio on demand
- You choose the audio item or programme.
- You can start listening at a time you choose, rather than only during its original broadcast.
- The content may be streamed, downloaded, or offered as a replay of a broadcast.
If a station is transmitting a programme live on its schedule, it is live radio. If you select that programme to play later, it is available as on-demand audio.
