DiffMerge is SourceGear’s visual tool for comparing files and folders and resolving three-way merges. It can show line-level and within-line differences, compare directory trees recursively, and integrate with several version-control tools. Its documentation spans a legacy 4.2 release and a newer GPL-3.0 repository, so check the specific build and operating-system requirements before installing.
What DiffMerge does
SourceGear describes DiffMerge as an application for visually comparing and merging files and folders on Windows, OS X, and Linux. Its main views address three different tasks:
- File Diff: Compare two files side by side, inspect changes down to intra-line detail, and edit in the comparison view.
- File Merge: Compare three files and resolve differences by accepting safe automatic merges or editing the result.
- Folder Diff: Compare directory trees recursively to find items that exist on one side only and paired files that are identical, equivalent, or different.

How do I compare two files?
Open a File Diff with the two files you want to inspect. DiffMerge displays them side by side and marks changed lines and differences within lines. You can edit in the view, which is useful when reviewing small changes or aligning text directly. The manual also documents a read-only option for the second file when opening a comparison from the command line.

For command-line usage and arguments, consult the DiffMerge command-line diff documentation. Exact command syntax depends on the arguments you provide; use the manual rather than assuming a command from another release applies unchanged.
How do I merge three files?
Open a File Merge with the three related files. The merge view compares them and lets you accept safe automatic merges or edit the resulting content. This is a three-input merge workflow, distinct from reviewing a pair of files in File Diff; use it when you need to resolve changes from multiple versions into a result.

How do I compare two folders?
Open Folder Diff with the two directory trees. DiffMerge builds a recursive listing that reports files or folders present only on one side and classifies paired files as identical, equivalent, or different. Open changed file pairs for a more detailed comparison.
Listing a large folder tree can take significant time, according to the Folder Diff manual. Allow for that when comparing repositories or other large directories.

Can DiffMerge fit a developer workflow?
Command line and version control
The manual documents command-line opening of file and folder comparisons, and includes integration guidance for Git, Mercurial, TortoiseSVN, Microsoft TFS, and Microsoft VSS. The presence of guidance does not guarantee a ready-made integration for every current version of those tools; follow the instructions for your environment.
Windows Explorer and external tools
SourceGear describes Windows Explorer integration for launching comparisons from a right-click. The manual also covers External Tools, which can route selected file suffixes to configured applications—for example, a word-processing document or XML file may be better opened in a specialized editor. Does DiffMerge work on Windows, Mac, or Linux?
SourceGear presents DiffMerge as cross-platform, but the available platform information belongs to different generations of the software and should not be treated as one current compatibility guarantee.

If you are choosing a build, check the package and requirements for your exact operating-system version and processor architecture. For macOS, account for the repository’s warning that its builds are not signed or notarized, which can affect installation and launch.

DiffMerge is worth considering if you want one visual application for two-file review, three-file merge resolution, and recursive folder comparison, especially if command-line or version-control integration matters to your workflow. Its feature descriptions are clear, but the gap between the dated 4.2 packages and repository build targets means compatibility should be verified rather than inferred from the general cross-platform claim.
