To stop an early combo, identify the exact spell, ability, permanent, or resource the opponent needs—and make sure your interaction can reach it before it matters. There is no universal anti-combo package: the right cards and number of slots depend on the format, the opposing combo, and whether those cards still let your deck execute its own plan.
Start by identifying the combo’s actual requirements
“Combo” describes many different ways to win, not one shared vulnerability. Before changing your list, write down the opponent’s likely line and answer these questions:
- What is the earliest plausible turn they can attempt it?
- Which card types or zones does the line depend on: spells, permanents, abilities, cards in hand, or graveyard resources?
- What must resolve, remain in play, or stay available for the line to work?
- What interaction does your deck already have, and can you cast it in time?
These questions turn “I need more anti-combo cards” into a testable problem: which point in this particular line can your deck disrupt?
Find the timing window that matters
Magic’s stack and priority rules explain why timing is as important as card choice. Under rule 117.4 of the Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules, a spell or ability on top of the stack resolves when all players pass in succession. Rule 117.7 says that a spell cast or activated ability activated while another spell or ability is on the stack is taken “in response” to it.

In practical terms, an answer needs to affect the line before its decisive object or resource gets past the point where that answer can matter. For example, an answer that only removes a permanent may not stop a combo that wins through a spell or ability before that permanent can be targeted. Likewise, a card that interacts with the stack does not automatically solve a line based on an already-established permanent or a resource in another zone. Check the actual sequence and the current wording of any card you are considering.
Choose an interaction category that overlaps with the line
Consider these approaches as categories, not a universal card list. Their value depends on the opponent’s line, your colors and mana, and the format’s legal card pool.

- Stack interaction: Consider it when the combo depends on a key spell or ability resolving. Confirm that the answer can affect that specific object and is castable during the relevant window.
- Hand disruption: Consider it when the opponent needs a particular card in hand and you can act before the line begins. It may be less useful once the necessary pieces are already available elsewhere.
- Permanent removal: Consider it when a required permanent must stay in play for the combo to work. Check whether you can remove it before the decisive action, rather than assuming removal can undo a line that has already succeeded.
- Graveyard disruption: Consider it when the opponent’s line depends on cards in the graveyard. It will not address a combo that does not use that resource.
- Pressure: A faster clock can constrain the opponent’s time to assemble or attempt a combo. It is not a substitute for interaction if the opponent can still win before combat matters.
For each candidate, check timing, coverage, mana and color requirements, usefulness outside the combo matchup, and legality in your format. The answer that looks strongest in isolation may be unreliable if your deck cannot cast it early or if it does not reach the combo’s decisive point.
Keep your own deck functioning
Interaction has an opportunity cost. Adding reactive cards can reduce the number of threats, setup pieces, or other tools that make your deck work; an overly defensive configuration can also give the opponent more time. When comparing candidates, ask whether each one both addresses the matchup and fits your deck’s normal plan.

- Sets can range from Beta to the current Magic the Gathering set.
- Mint/Excellent condition only.
A broadly useful card may earn a main-deck slot if it contributes in other matchups too. A narrow answer may make more sense after sideboarding when it targets a specific opponent. Neither choice is automatic: weigh the expected matchup against what the card displaces and how often you can use it effectively.
Use sideboard slots deliberately
In tournament Constructed, the Magic Tournament Rules set a 60-card minimum for the main deck and allow an optional sideboard of up to 15 cards. The combined deck and sideboard generally cannot contain more than four copies of an individual card, subject to exceptions. Format-specific legality restrictions also apply, so check the current rules and banned list for your format before settling on a card or configuration.

There is no defensible universal number of sideboard slots for combo without knowing your format and field. A narrow card is a candidate when it addresses a matchup you expect to face and does not weaken too many other matchups; a card with wider use may justify a slot across more of the field. Compare candidates on these points:
- Timing: Can you use it before the combo’s decisive spell or ability resolves?
- Coverage: Does it stop the actual line, or only one card type, zone, or setup?
- Cost and colors: Can your deck cast it early while continuing its own plan?
- Other matchups: Is it useful beyond the combo opponent?
- Legality: Is it legal under the current rules for your format?
Test the change, then revise
Use a consistent testing log rather than judging a change by one memorable game. For each match, record the matchup, whether you were on the play or draw, the turn the opponent attempted the combo, which interaction you drew, and whether you could cast it at the relevant time. Also note whether the added cards interfered with your own plan.

If the answer was in hand but uncastable, adding more copies may not address the real issue. If it was castable but did not affect the actual line, look for interaction with different coverage. This is a recommended way to evaluate your list, not a claim that any particular package has been tested or improves results by a set amount.
What information is needed for exact card recommendations?
The title alone does not establish a format, colors, budget, opposing combo, or metagame. Those details determine card legality and whether an answer can be cast in time. To get a useful specific package, provide your format, deck list or colors, the combo deck or line you are facing, and whether you want main-deck changes, sideboard options, or both. Verify current legality against the format’s rules and banned list before playing the cards.
