The Orange Pi Neo is a proposed handheld gaming PC built around Manjaro Linux, but it is not a confirmed retail product you can buy today. Manjaro’s official project thread says the launch is paused because of high DDR5 memory and SSD prices; although CE and FCC certifications are complete, the team is waiting for a better time to launch. An earlier H2 2026 target is no longer a firm release date. Manjaro’s project thread is the latest status source, and GamingOnLinux reported the pause on February 27, 2026.
What is the Orange Pi Neo?
It is a proposed handheld PC developed with Manjaro, intended to run PC games as well as provide a Linux desktop. Manjaro’s product page describes the device and its published specifications, while the project thread outlines a game-focused operating environment that can switch between Plasma Desktop and a Gamescope-oriented mode. The project’s software stack includes Gamescope, OpenGamepadUI, and InputPlumber. Those development notes describe work in progress, not a guarantee that every feature will ship in a retail build.
The product’s central pitch is a handheld form factor paired with Manjaro Gaming Edition, an immutable system with a GamepadUI update path. “Immutable” refers to the system’s update model; it does not by itself establish game compatibility, performance, or long-term support. The available project information does not include independent benchmarks or a finalized retail software feature list.
Why is the Orange Pi Neo on hold?
In its 2026 KW05 status update, Manjaro project lead Philip Müller said the project was on ice because DDR5 RAM and SSD prices were high. He also said CE and FCC certifications were complete and that the team was waiting for a suitable launch window. The statement was posted in the official Manjaro project thread. The project’s earlier H2 2026 aim predates that pause, so it should not be treated as a confirmed launch date.

These figures show what Manjaro says it plans to offer, not how well the handheld will perform in games. The product and project information does not provide a comparable independent benchmark, sustained-performance test, battery-runtime measurement, or final retail configuration comparison.
What is known about the software and desktop features?
Manjaro’s project lead describes a gaming-oriented immutable Manjaro system based on Plasma 6, focused on Flatpak apps, with a Plasma desktop and game-focused mode. The thread records development work on controller handling, gyroscope support, power controls, fan behavior, sleep, and firmware updates. These notes indicate the areas being developed; they do not confirm that each item is complete, polished, or included in a released build.

The desktop mode and two listed USB4 Type-C ports suggest the Neo is intended to work beyond handheld play. A USB-C dock could be one way to connect peripherals, but specific compatibility is unverified: check a dock’s video-output support, power delivery, and port requirements against final device specifications before buying.
What price was announced, and is it current?
Manjaro project lead Philip Müller’s 2025 project update listed these expected base-model prices. They are historical expectations, not current retail prices, offers, or confirmation that either configuration will be sold.

| Ryzen 7 8840U, 32 GB memory, 512 GB storage | $550 or 4,499 CNY |
The second processor configuration differs from the Ryzen 7 7840U listed on the product page. The project thread’s price entries should therefore be read as proposed configurations, not as a definitive final lineup. No current retail price or confirmed purchase availability is established by the cited sources.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you upgrade the Orange Pi Neo?
The project thread says a regular M.2 2280 NVMe drive can be replaced. That is a project-stated upgrade path, not a substitute for a final service guide: compatibility, access procedure, warranty implications, and supported drive limits should be checked against production documentation. With the product on ice and final specifications unconfirmed, buying an SSD specifically for this device is premature.

What should a prospective buyer compare?
Because the Neo is not a confirmed retail option and has no independent performance testing in the cited materials, comparisons should focus on verifiable criteria rather than claims that it is faster or better than another handheld. When evaluating a released alternative, compare:
- Operating-system support, update model, and game compatibility for the games you play.
- Processor performance and cooling under comparable independent testing, including sustained use.
- Display size, resolution, refresh rate, and measured brightness.
- Battery runtime and fan behavior under comparable workloads.
- Controls, touchpad support, and any gyroscope features you need.
- Storage upgradeability, ports, docking support, warranty, price, and confirmed availability in your region.
For the Neo, the specifications above are manufacturer-published claims; the project material does not establish a like-for-like benchmark against competing handhelds.
