Start by checking the exact game’s PC requirements, then work through the game installation, graphics drivers and GPU selection, settings, background software, and hardware conditions. For a Steam game that crashes or is missing content, verify its installed files. Change one thing at a time and retest the same area or activity: the official guidance cited here does not promise a particular FPS gain or a universal fix.

These steps focus on PC troubleshooting, with some advice specific to Starfield. Menus and fixes differ by game, launcher, and operating system; use the game’s own current support guidance where a step is platform-specific.

First, identify what is going wrong

A crash stops the game or sends you back to the desktop. Low FPS means the game is running slowly overall. Stuttering or choppiness describes intermittent hitches; the sources here discuss these symptoms but do not establish a universal diagnostic definition. They can have overlapping causes, so note when the problem happens before changing settings.

  • One game only: Begin with that game’s requirements, files, settings, and official support instructions.
  • Several games or other demanding apps: Check system-wide factors such as driver state, background load, GPU selection, memory pressure, and cooling.
  • Only a particular area or activity: Retest there after each change. This helps establish whether a change affected the symptom without assuming a specific cause.

Check whether the PC meets the game’s requirements

Compare your system with the current requirements listed by the game’s store page or publisher. Steam cautions that meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee high FPS. Bethesda likewise puts checking minimum requirements at the start of its Starfield PC performance guidance.

Check the requirements for the exact game and edition rather than assuming that a recommendation for another RPG applies. If there is a genuine hardware shortfall, compare possible upgrades against the game’s requirements, the component that is actually limiting your system, and your PC’s compatibility. Steam names a graphics card or memory upgrade as possible options when requirements are not met; neither is a guaranteed fix for every crash or hitch.

For Starfield specifically, Bethesda recommends installing the game on an SSD rather than a hard disk drive. That is game-specific storage guidance, not evidence that an SSD will fix every performance problem. Check that an internal SSD upgrade is compatible with your computer and relevant to the game before buying one.

For a Steam crash or missing content, verify the game files

Steam says file verification can help when a game crashes or content is missing. This checks that the installed game files are present and correct; it does not diagnose every driver, settings, or hardware problem.

  1. Open Steam Library and select the game.
  2. Open the game’s Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files.
  4. Choose Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.

The check may take several minutes. Steam notes that files that fail verification can be local configuration files, and that this can be normal. Avoid running verification while other system-intensive work is underway. These instructions apply to a Steam installation; another launcher may have a different repair option.

Check graphics drivers, GPU selection, and power behavior

Use current video drivers, following the instructions for your GPU vendor and the game. Driver installation or reset procedures vary, so do not treat a clean reset as a universal first step.

On a laptop with multiple GPUs, confirm that the game is using the primary GPU rather than integrated graphics. Bethesda notes that power-saving behavior can select integrated graphics for Starfield. Check the game’s official instructions and your system’s graphics or power settings for the applicable controls.

Try reversible settings and background-software checks

Resolution and graphics options affect performance. Lowering a demanding setting or resolution may help, but the cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed FPS increase. Close unnecessary background applications and free memory where possible, then test again.

For Starfield, Bethesda recommends disabling Steam Overlay and/or Xbox Game Bar as a performance check. Treat this as a diagnostic step for that game, not as a requirement for all RPGs. Change one setting or close one application at a time, then retest the same location or activity so you can tell what changed.

When hitches persist, consider heat and memory pressure

Steam’s hardware troubleshooting guidance discusses heat, airflow, and memory pressure as possible contributors to slowdowns or repeated hitches. A hitch alone does not prove that the PC is overheating or short of memory. Check the system’s conditions and behavior rather than relying on an assumed universal temperature threshold; the sources do not specify one.

  • Make sure the PC has room for airflow and that cooling is not obviously obstructed.
  • Close unnecessary applications and observe whether the hitching changes.
  • Consider whether the problem appears after sustained play, while also checking other possible causes such as game settings and drivers.

Use advanced crash troubleshooting only when it fits

Bethesda’s advanced crashing and freezing guidance is for Starfield on PC. It suggests testing with a new Windows profile, clean or factory-resetting the GPU driver, and avoiding conflicts from running the Xbox app and Steam simultaneously. These steps can affect system configuration, so follow Bethesda’s instructions for Starfield rather than applying them as mandatory fixes to another game.

Choose the next step from the evidence

What you observe Start with Why
A Steam game crashes or is missing content Verify its installed files Steam identifies file verification as a relevant check for these symptoms.
One game runs slowly Check that game’s requirements, GPU selection, drivers, resolution, and graphics settings These checks address game-specific configuration and performance factors.
Several games hitch or slow down Check background load, memory pressure, drivers, and cooling These are system-wide factors discussed in Steam’s performance guidance.
Starfield continues to crash on PC Follow Bethesda’s advanced Starfield troubleshooting Its profile, driver-reset, and app-conflict checks are specifically documented for Starfield.
Requirements reveal a hardware shortfall Compare compatible upgrades against the specific shortfall A graphics card, memory, or storage change addresses different needs; none is established as a universal cure.
