A home automation hub is a device or platform component that connects and coordinates compatible smart-home devices, often bringing their control and automations together. “Hub” is a broad product label: it does not guarantee universal compatibility, a particular wireless radio, or offline operation. Check the exact model’s supported devices and capabilities.
What does “home automation hub” mean?
Tuya Developer defines a smart-home hub as “typically a connection point in the home for multiple smart home devices.” In practice, a hub can connect devices, provide a shared control point, or coordinate automations. Depending on the product, those functions may be part of a dedicated hub or built into a speaker, display, router, or streaming device.
The label alone does not tell you which devices will work with it. A hub may combine several wireless technologies and software roles, but another product marketed as a hub may support only a narrower set. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the specific model. Tuya Developer’s Matter Overview glossary discusses hubs and their possible roles.
How is a hub different from a Matter controller, bridge, or Thread border router?
These terms describe different functions. One physical product can perform several of them, but the terms are not interchangeable.

| Term | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hub | A broad product category for a connection or control point for compatible smart-home devices. Its specific radios and functions depend on the model. |
| Matter controller | Administers Matter devices in a platform, including their setup and control. It is a software role, not a name for every smart-home hub. |
| Bridge | Connects supported non-Matter devices or protocols to an ecosystem that can work with the bridge. Which device functions carry across depends on the implementation. |
| Thread border router | Connects a Thread network to the home’s IP network. This networking role does not, by itself, make a device a Matter controller. |
Google’s developer documentation uses “hub” for supported Google Nest devices used to control Matter devices through Google Home surfaces such as the Google Home app and Assistant. That is a Google-specific usage, not a universal definition. Google’s Matter getting-started documentation describes its platform’s roles, and its Thread Play services APIs documentation explains the Thread border-router role.
Do you need a hub for Matter?
It depends on the Matter device’s network transport and the platform you use. Matter devices can use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. For Google Home, Wi-Fi-only Matter devices can be managed by listed Wi-Fi-capable hub devices. Matter devices that use Thread require a Google Home hub with Thread border-router functionality. A product can be a Matter controller without providing that Thread networking role, so check for both when choosing equipment for Thread devices.

Google’s compatible-device categories include speakers, displays, Wi-Fi routers, streamers, and select TVs; its documentation distinguishes devices with Wi-Fi support from those that also support Thread. The compatible-device list can change, so consult Google Home Help’s Matter preparation page for the current models and setup requirements.
What to check before choosing a hub
- Ecosystem and exact device support: Confirm that the platform supports each device model you plan to use. A shared brand name does not guarantee compatibility.
- Protocols and radios: Check whether the hub supports the connection methods your devices need, such as Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, or Z-Wave. Do not infer support for a radio from the word “hub.”
- Matter roles: If you use Matter devices, verify that the hub or platform can act as their Matter controller. If those devices use Thread, separately verify Thread border-router support.
- Bridging: If you have existing non-Matter devices, check whether the bridge supports their protocol and which controls or features it makes available in your chosen ecosystem.
- Control and automation: Look for documented support for app, voice, or display controls and for the automations you want. Some hubs can process automations locally; do not assume that yours does.
- Setup and remote access: Confirm whether setup or remote control requires a vendor’s hub, app, account, or internet connection. Offline behavior is product-specific and should be documented by the manufacturer.
Where a hub’s functions may be built in
A hub does not have to be a standalone box. Some speakers, displays, routers, streamers, and other platform devices can provide hub functions. Even then, capabilities vary by model: a device that controls Wi-Fi Matter products may not include Thread border-router support, and neither capability alone confirms support for every smart-home protocol or device.
