Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is a service that lets sellers send inventory to Amazon fulfillment centers, where Amazon stores it and handles customer orders. For enrolled products, Amazon picks, packs, and ships orders and provides customer service and returns support. Sellers still choose and prepare their products, send inventory to Amazon, and pay fees that vary by product and service.
What does Fulfillment by Amazon mean?
FBA stands for Fulfillment by Amazon. It is an order-fulfillment service for marketplace sellers: the seller supplies products to Amazon, and Amazon takes on specified storage and order-handling tasks. Amazon describes the service as covering picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns. Amazon’s FBA overview explains the service and its workflow.
FBA does not mean Amazon chooses or buys the seller’s products. The seller selects which eligible products to enroll, prepares and sends the inventory, and remains responsible for decisions such as how much stock to supply and whether the costs make sense.
How does FBA work?
- Set up selling and choose products. Create or configure a selling account for FBA, list products, and assign eligible inventory to the service. Some products may require approval, have additional requirements, or be ineligible.
- Prepare inventory. Follow Amazon’s current product preparation, packing, and routing requirements before sending stock.
- Create a shipment. In Seller Central, create a shipping plan, print the shipment ID labels, and send the shipment to the designated Amazon fulfillment center.
- Amazon receives and stores the stock. Once received, the inventory can be offered to customers.
- Amazon fulfills orders. When a customer orders an enrolled item, Amazon picks and packs it, ships it, and handles customer service and returns within the service’s scope.
Amazon’s detailed process and requirements can change; use its current FBA workflow guidance when preparing a shipment.

What does FBA cost?
There is no single FBA fee that applies to every product. Amazon says costs depend on the product and services used. Its cost guidance distinguishes fulfillment charges—which cover tasks such as picking, packing, shipping, customer service, and returns—from storage charges based on the space inventory occupies. Other charges may apply, including aged-inventory, returns-processing, removal or disposal, and inbound placement fees. See Amazon’s current pricing guidance and use its fee preview or revenue calculator with the product’s details before deciding.
Fees and rate examples can change and depend on the applicable product tier and marketplace. Avoid relying on a general per-item estimate: compare the current charges for the specific item and expected time in storage against the cost of fulfilling orders yourself.

- Accurate to 0.1oz: High precision for postage, packaging, or food preparation.

- Clear LCD Display: Large, backlit screen makes weights easy to read, even in dim rooms.

What remains the seller’s responsibility?
- Choosing products and deciding which eligible inventory to enroll.
- Preparing products and shipments to meet Amazon’s requirements.
- Sending inventory to Amazon and managing replenishment decisions.
- Checking product-specific fees and evaluating whether the service is worthwhile for the business.
Amazon has said on its US-facing FBA page that shipping with FBA costs “70% less per unit” than comparable premium options offered by other major US carriers. That is Amazon’s own comparison, not an independently verified general savings estimate; the page material does not state the underlying methodology. It should not be treated as a guarantee of what an individual seller will save.

With FBA, Amazon performs the listed fulfillment work for enrolled inventory. With seller fulfillment, the seller arranges the storage, packing, shipping, and related customer-service operations. Which approach is preferable depends on the item and the seller’s operation; compare these factors before choosing:

- Returns and customer service: Account for who handles these tasks under each method.
- Delivery offer and eligibility: Check the current terms and product eligibility for the marketplace where you sell rather than assuming the same offer applies to every item.
For FBA shipment labels, a thermal label printer may be a convenience, but Amazon’s workflow calls for printing labels and does not make a thermal printer a requirement.
