Fish Shell 4.4.0 was released on February 3, 2026, with Vi-mode word motions that behave more like Vim, support for counted movements and deletions, and new catppuccin-* color themes. The release also included interactive-shell and developer changes. Later fish releases corrected several Vi-mode regressions associated with 4.4.0, so its feature announcement is not the last word on those bindings.
What changed in fish 4.4.0 Vi mode?
The 4.4.0 release notes say the w, W, e, and E word motions are now largely in line with Vim. One documented difference remains: fish treats underscores as word separators. If you rely on Vim’s exact word boundaries, that distinction can affect where a motion stops.
Vi-mode bindings also gained counts for movement and deletion commands through a new operator mode. The release notes give d3w (delete three words) and 3l (move right three characters) as examples. These let you express a repeat count as part of a modal command rather than issuing the movement repeatedly.

What else was included in the release?
bindlists mappings from all modes when you omit--mode.- Fish no longer displays line-wise autosuggestions that do not start a command.

How to inspect or change fish themes
Fish 4.4.0’s new theme family is named catppuccin-* in the release notes. Themes are configuration files, not a separate product. The fish_config theme command provides ways to choose, demo, dump, list, and show themes.
- Run
fish_config theme --helpto see the theme command’s available options. - Use
fish_config theme --listto list themes, orfish_config theme --show NAMEto inspect one. ReplaceNAMEwith a listed theme. - Use
fish_config theme --demo NAMEto preview a theme, orfish_config theme NAMEto select it. The 4.4.0 documentation describes these theme controls and options. - To add a custom theme, place its theme file in the fish configuration directory, typically
~/.config/fish/themes.
Theme selection can apply light or dark variants according to fish_terminal_color_theme; the --color-theme option can override that choice. Consult the fish 4.4.0 fish_config documentation for the command details and file workflow.

What happened to the Vi-mode changes afterward?
Fish 4.5.0 was described in the later 4.7.1 release notes as mostly a patch release for Vi-mode regressions in 4.4.0. Its listed corrections cover d,f, c,w, a crash on c,i,w after accepting an autosuggestion, and fish_vi_key_bindings when called with a mode argument. These are subsequent fixes; the notes do not say that every 4.4.0 user encountered each issue. The fish 4.7.1 release notes contain the 4.5.0 entry.
