What happened in the Tidrone campaign?
Trend Micro’s September 10, 2024 report described intrusions into organizations in Taiwan’s military-related and satellite industries. Drone manufacturers were a main focus. The public reporting does not identify the individual companies affected.
In a news summary published the same day, SecurityWeek described Trend Micro’s findings as hackers targeting drone makers. The underlying report characterized the actor as an espionage threat and detailed malware deployment and post-compromise activity.
Who is Tidrone, and what is known about attribution?
Tidrone is Trend Micro’s name for a threat group it described as Chinese-speaking and yet unidentified. Trend Micro based its China-related assessment on similarities to Chinese espionage-related activity. That is an attributed analytic assessment—not public proof of direct government control.

Trend Micro assessed espionage as the likely motive because military-related suppliers and drone manufacturers may hold sensitive information. The report’s conclusion was: “The focus on military-related industry chains, particularly in the manufacturers of drones, suggests an espionage motive, given the sensitive data these entities typically hold. This further reinforces the likelihood that Tidrone is engaged in espionage-related activities,” Trend Micro notes. The report does not attribute that statement to a named individual.
What malware and techniques did Tidrone use?
Trend Micro said Tidrone used enterprise resource planning (ERP) software and remote desktop access to deploy malware. Its reporting identified two backdoors, Cxclnt and Clntend, deployed using UltraVNC, a legitimate remote-control tool. The presence of a legitimate utility does not by itself indicate that the software is malicious; in this case, Trend Micro reported its use as part of the intrusion.

After gaining access, the actor was observed moving laterally, deploying tools, harvesting credentials, bypassing User Account Control, and disabling antivirus solutions. Together, those actions indicate that the activity went beyond a single malware installation and included efforts to expand access and evade defenses inside victim environments.
Was this a supply-chain attack?
That has not been confirmed. Trend Micro observed the same ERP system in different victims’ environments and said the pattern suggested malware might have been distributed through a supply-chain attack. The shared ERP observation is a possible clue about distribution, not proof of the initial access route or a confirmed compromise of the ERP vendor.

How does Tidrone differ from later drone-sector attacks?
Later reporting on other drone-related targets should not be treated as evidence that Tidrone continued its campaign. ESET Research’s May 28, 2026 APT Activity Report covers activity from October 2025 through March 2026 and describes separate operations: China-aligned activity against an AI and robotics company in South Korea, and Russian-aligned Sednit activity against Ukrainian drone manufacturers and drone research organizations. ESET does not identify either as Tidrone activity.

- ERP and remote access: Review access controls, authentication, and activity logs for ERP systems and remote desktop tools, including legitimate utilities such as UltraVNC.
- Credentials and lateral movement: Investigate unusual account use and movement between systems, particularly when accompanied by privilege-related changes or new tools.
- Endpoint defenses: Treat attempts to bypass User Account Control or disable antivirus as incident indicators; check whether monitoring and alerting remain effective when protections are altered.
- Persistence and cleanup: Examine unexpected services, scheduled tasks, process injection, and signs of trace deletion during an investigation.
