That is the core of a browser-only screen recorder. The title’s 4K claim describes the author’s build; the available API documentation does not independently verify its resolution, frame rate, recording quality, or device compatibility.
Can a browser record your screen in 4K?
It can provide the building blocks for a screen recorder, but using browser APIs does not by itself prove that a particular recorder captures or saves 4K video. The browser asks the user to choose a display surface, returns a media stream, and can pass that stream to a recording API. Whether the resulting video actually has 4K dimensions and acceptable performance depends on the implementation, browser, operating system, hardware, and selected display.
For this specific recorder, no verified capture dimensions, frame rate, output codec, test matrix, or measured performance results are available. Treat “4K” as the author’s claim about the build rather than as a result independently confirmed for all browsers or devices.
How the browser-only recording workflow works
1. Ask the user to select a screen
The application calls getDisplayMedia(). The browser prompts the user to select and authorize a display, window, or other available surface; a page cannot silently start screen capture. The API returns a MediaStream when permission is granted. It requires a secure context, such as HTTPS, in browsers that support it, and MDN classifies its availability as limited. See MDN’s getDisplayMedia() reference.

2. Record the stream
The stream can be recorded with the MediaStream Recording API, commonly through MediaRecorder. The recorder emits media data that an application can collect in chunks and process or write to a file. The API documentation describes this recording path, but the actual container and codec depend on browser support. See MDN’s MediaStream Recording API reference.
3. Save the result locally
A web app can write recorded chunks to a user-selected file where the browser supports the relevant file-saving API. The web.dev screen-recording example demonstrates collecting MediaRecorder chunks and saving them to a user-selected destination. Its support information distinguishes screen capture, recording, and the File System Access API: support for one does not guarantee support for the others. A recorder therefore needs an appropriate fallback when direct file saving is unavailable.

What happens to audio and file formats?
Audio is optional and browser-dependent
Screen audio is not guaranteed. A request for audio and video may return a stream with only video, and available audio tracks or sources vary among browsers and capture surfaces. Microphone audio is a separate consideration from audio accompanying the selected display; an implementation that offers both must specify how it acquires and combines them rather than implying they are always present. MDN covers these caveats in its screen-capture guide and getDisplayMedia() reference.
Detect the format instead of assuming it
Browsers do not all support the same media containers and codecs. An app should check which MIME types and codecs the target browser supports, then make the chosen output format clear to the user. MDN’s recording example uses a WebM MIME type, but that example is not a guarantee that every browser or recorder supports the same format. WebKit likewise recommends feature detection; its format discussion dates to 2020 and should not be treated as a current universal guarantee. See WebKit’s MediaRecorder overview.

What “entirely in the browser” does—and does not—mean
The documented workflow can keep capture and recording in the browser and write the resulting data to a local destination, rather than requiring a server to record the screen. That does not establish how this particular build handles every stage, such as encoding, temporary storage, or export. A W3C WebCodecs example places encoder input/output and file writing in a Worker, but it is an implementation example, not evidence that this recorder uses WebCodecs or achieves a particular level of performance: W3C WebCodecs capture-to-file sample.
Chrome’s developer guide also describes getDisplayMedia() as the screen-capture entry point and points to MediaRecorder for recording the stream: Chrome screen-capture guide. The presence of these APIs explains how an implementation can work; it does not establish a browser-wide 4K guarantee.

What evidence would verify the 4K claim?
A meaningful performance claim needs results from the actual recorder, not just evidence that it calls browser APIs. At minimum, report:
- The captured width and height, including whether the recorded file itself—not only the preview—has 4K dimensions.
- The observed frame rate and any dropped-frame behavior during recording.
- The output container and codec, plus the browser’s support check for that format.
- The browser and version, operating system, and device hardware used for each test.
- Recording duration and output size, with conditions stated for each result.
- Whether encoding, intermediate processing, and saving remain local, and what happens when local file saving is unsupported.
- How the app behaves if permission is denied, the user stops sharing, or a display track ends during recording.
Without those details, there is no basis to generalize the title’s 4K result to other browsers, devices, or recording conditions.
