Portkey sits between your application and model providers, giving your app a common interface for routing requests and applying gateway controls. You can use Portkey’s hosted service or operate an open-source gateway yourself; the choice is mainly between less infrastructure work and more operational control. Self-hosting does not, by itself, guarantee that all data stays private or that every feature is available without a commercial agreement.

What Portkey does in an LLM deployment

Portkey describes its gateway as a unified interface for applications that use multiple model providers. Instead of integrating each provider’s API directly into application code, a team can send requests through the gateway and manage provider access and selected routing, reliability, and observability controls in one layer. The company’s current positioning also uses the name “PRISMA AIRS AI Gateway” for enterprise offerings; confirm the exact product and edition relevant to your deployment on Portkey’s official site.

A gateway can help route work and respond to provider errors, but it does not guarantee provider uptime, make a model’s output correct, or remove the need to design and monitor the application around it.

Choose a deployment model

Option What you gain What you must check or operate
Portkey hosted service Portkey operates the gateway service, so your team has less gateway infrastructure to run. Check current plan price, usage limits, log handling and retention, security controls, and any data-residency requirements. Review the plan terms against your organization’s needs.
Open-source, self-hosted gateway You choose where the gateway software runs and take greater responsibility for its operation. Your team must plan infrastructure, availability, upgrades, and production configuration. Confirm the selected release’s supported deployment method, prerequisites, and license in Portkey’s current documentation and repository.
Enterprise on-premises option Portkey describes additional enterprise controls for this option. Confirm current feature inclusion, deployment scope, and commercial terms directly with Portkey; do not assume these controls are part of every self-hosted release.

When hosted is the practical choice

A hosted service is a reasonable starting point when you want to evaluate routing without taking on gateway operations. Before using it with production traffic, verify the current plan’s limits and how requests, logs, and related data are handled. The official pricing page is time-sensitive: when checked on October 4, 2026, it showed a free hosted tier for prototyping and evaluation, not production, a Production tier at $49 per month, and custom-priced Enterprise. The same page described the Production tier as not recommended for organizations needing custom security controls or data-residency guarantees. Recheck current prices and language before choosing a plan.

When self-hosting is worth the operational work

Self-hosting gives your team control over where the gateway software runs and how it is operated. It also makes your team responsible for infrastructure and availability. It is not enough to deploy the gateway inside a private network and conclude that all data remains private: verify the actual request and control-plane paths, provider connections, logging and retention behavior, and the terms of the edition you intend to use.

Portkey answers “Can we self-host Portkey?” through its official documentation and related product materials. Use those current materials to establish the supported deployment route and release-specific requirements; do not rely on a generic command or an assumed deployment recipe.

Private LoRaWAN Gateway (US 915MHz) | Built-in Local Server & Node-RED | 8-Channel Indoor IoT Hub for Smart Agriculture | No Monthly Fees, All-in-One Edge Server
  • NO SUBSCRIPTION FEES & PRIVATE LORAWAN NETWORK: Build a local LoRaWAN IoT network with the built-in SIoT server and pre-installed Node-RED. Collect data, create dashboards, and run automation flows locally without required cloud service fees. Suitable for DIY makers, home gardeners, educators, and small IoT prototype projects.
  • LOCAL DATA PROCESSING & PRIVACY CONTROL: Sensor data can be processed on the local network through the built‑in MQTT/SIoT server, reducing reliance on third‑party cloud platforms. Local automation rules continue running when internet access is unavailable — suitable for home, garden, greenhouse, and classroom IoT setups.
  • 4KM COVERAGE & 8-CHANNEL RELIABILITY: Equipped with the SX1302 8-channel LoRaWAN chip, -140dBm sensitivity, 27dBm max transmit power, and included 5dBi antenna. Supports up to 4km coverage in open environments, helping connect garden sensors, greenhouse nodes, garages, mailboxes, and remote monitoring points.
  • NODE-RED DRAG-AND-DROP VISUAL AUTOMATION:Automation rules, data dashboards, and control logic can be built with little to no coding using the pre‑installed Node‑RED. Flows such as reading soil moisture, checking temperature, and sending relay commands are created through a visual interface — reducing setup time for maker, education, and prototype projects.
  • EASY SETUP WITH WIFI AP & MQTT INTEGRATION: Configure the gateway via Wi-Fi AP mode using a laptop or mobile device. Built-in MQTT broker supports integration with Node-RED dashboards, and other MQTT-compatible platforms. Designed for indoor residential, educational, and prototyping use; not intended for outdoor installation.

When to evaluate enterprise on-premises

Portkey’s Gateway 2.0 article describes enterprise on-premises controls including SSO, SCIM, AWS KMS, RBAC, JWT, audit logs, and multi-workspace. Treat that list as a prompt for verification, not a guarantee that each feature is included in every release or contract. Ask Portkey to confirm current availability, licensing, and configuration for your deployment.

How routing and resilience controls fit together

Portkey’s gateway feature materials describe conditional routing, automatic fallbacks, retries, load balancing, timeouts, and caching. Its Gateway 2.0 article also describes circuit breakers that can react to latency or error rate, along with usage policies based on requests, tokens, or cost. Together, these controls can help distribute requests, respond to failures, and constrain usage. Their exact configuration and availability can vary by release and plan.

  • Routing and load balancing: direct requests among configured models or providers according to the rules you define.
  • Retries, fallbacks, and circuit breakers: provide ways to handle selected errors or unhealthy endpoints, but test the behavior for your failure conditions and application’s latency needs.
  • Timeouts and caching: control how long requests wait and whether eligible responses can be reused; validate suitability for your data and workload.
  • Usage policies: the Gateway 2.0 article describes request-, token-, and cost-based controls. Confirm which are available and how limits are enforced in your selected edition.

These features do not make different models interchangeable. A fallback may change output quality, latency, or modality support, so the application should handle those differences deliberately.

Connect providers and compatible endpoints

Portkey names providers including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Cohere, Mistral, Hugging Face, AWS Bedrock, and Azure OpenAI. Its universal API documentation describes a common OpenAI-style interface. Portkey also documents compatible locally hosted or private endpoints, but an endpoint must expose a supported interface and be reachable as documented. Provider coverage does not mean every provider supports identical API features or modalities through the gateway.

The homepage shows Node/JavaScript and Python SDK examples. Use the current SDK documentation for working initialization, provider configuration, and credential handling rather than copying a snippet without checking its version and requirements.

Check feature, license, and security details before production

Portkey’s Gateway 2.0 article describes an open-source gateway feature set that includes semantic caching, circuit breakers, budgets, a model catalog, metadata governance, and configuration management. The same article separately lists enterprise on-premises controls. Do not infer from a blog description that a capability is available in every current release, license, hosted plan, or commercial arrangement.

  • Check the selected release’s repository license before commercial use, redistribution, or modification.
  • Confirm which features are available in that release and whether any require an enterprise agreement.
  • Review where request data travels, what is logged, who can access it, and applicable retention settings.
  • Plan upgrades, monitoring, and availability if your team operates the gateway.
  • Test routing, failure handling, limits, and fallback behavior with the providers and endpoints your application will actually use.

Portkey’s feature descriptions and plan details can change. The current documentation, official gateway repository, and pricing page are the places to verify release-specific setup, licensing, and commercial terms. No independently verified statistic or named-person quotation is needed to assess the deployment choice.
