“General failure reading drive X:” is a generic device-error message in legacy MS-DOS, not proof that a particular drive component has failed. “X” is the drive letter shown in the message, such as A: or C:. The cause depends on the operating system and the kind of drive involved.

What does the message mean?

Microsoft’s MS-DOS 3.20 User Reference classifies “General failure reading drive (x:)” as a “Device error.” The wording reports that DOS could not complete a read; it does not identify a failed hard drive, floppy drive, diskette, or cable.

The phrase comes from legacy DOS-era software and storage. A similar-looking message in a current version of Windows may have a different context, so do not assume that DOS-era explanations or remedies apply automatically.

What can cause it?

Legacy technical references describe several possibilities rather than one universal cause:

  • Media or format: A disk may be unformatted or formatted for an operating system other than DOS, as noted in an Explorer manual and the FreeDOS troubleshooting guide.
  • Floppy diskette: The diskette itself may be physically bad, according to a field service manual.
  • Floppy drive or connection: The same service manual identifies a dirty or misaligned read/write head and a faulty data or control cable as possible causes.
  • Other device errors: The FreeDOS guide describes the message as a catchall for errors not covered more specifically, and notes that older programs could sometimes report it in connection with a SHARE.EXE file-sharing conflict. That possibility depends on the program and DOS-era setup.

IBM also documented a floppy-drive error associated with an EMC clip on the Netfinity 3500 Type 8644 and IntelliStation M Pro Type 6898. Its guidance is specific to those configurations; it is not evidence that EMC clips are a general cause on other computers. See IBM’s notice.

What should you check first?

Before trying a repair, establish which drive and system produced the message. A floppy-drive read failure and a fixed-disk error are not interchangeable cases.

  1. Note the exact drive letter and operating system. Record whether the message names A:, C:, or another drive, and whether it appeared in DOS, a DOS program, or a newer operating system.
  2. Identify the device. Determine whether the letter refers to a floppy drive, another removable disk, or a fixed disk.
  3. For a legacy floppy case, test the media carefully. If the data is not at risk, try a known-good diskette that is compatible with the drive, and check whether the diskette’s format is supported by the DOS environment. A different diskette can help distinguish a media problem from a drive problem, but it cannot rule out a dirty head, misalignment, or cable fault.
  4. For a documented IBM configuration, use the matching notice. Follow IBM’s guidance only if the machine and configuration match the Netfinity 3500 Type 8644 or IntelliStation M Pro Type 6898 case described there.

Should you format the disk?

Not as a first response if you need the files. A historical manual recommends formatting an unformatted disk or partition in its DOS context, but that advice does not address data recovery or the risk of erasing information. First establish whether the disk contains data you need and whether the issue is actually an unsupported or absent format.

Does this mean a modern hard drive has failed?

No such conclusion follows from the wording alone. The cited material is focused on DOS and legacy equipment; it does not establish a universal repair sequence or diagnose contemporary Windows storage failures. For a current system, use the exact error text and the operating system’s own troubleshooting guidance rather than treating this DOS message as a component-level diagnosis.
