KDE Plasma 6.7 was released on June 16, 2026. It added independent virtual-desktop switching for each screen and compositor support for Wayland session management. The first is a user-facing multi-monitor feature; the second is groundwork for app restoration, not a guarantee that every application will reopen its windows, sizes, and positions after a restart.
What Plasma 6.7 added
The release made two changes relevant to how desktops and windows behave. KDE describes per-screen virtual desktops as a shipped feature: each screen can switch independently among the system’s virtual desktops. KWin also gained support for the Wayland session-management protocol, which is one part of enabling applications to remember window state across system restarts.
KDE’s Plasma 6.7 release announcement and release mailing-list announcement confirm that Plasma 6.7 launched June 16, 2026. These are features of the released version, not planned additions.
How per-screen virtual desktops work
With separate virtual desktops on different monitors, changing the desktop shown on one screen does not require changing the desktop shown on another. This is useful when you want to keep different groups of work visible across multiple displays—for example, leaving one screen on a reference desktop while switching the other to a different workspace.

KDE’s April 18, 2026 feature report says each screen can switch independently among the system’s virtual desktops. KDE’s release announcement describes switching desktops in Overview by scrolling or pressing Page Up or Page Down; open Overview with Meta + W. KDE characterized the feature as arriving “After 21 years”; that is KDE’s description of its history, not an independently verified measurement.
What Wayland session restore does—and does not—do
Session restoration is less complete as a user-facing promise. In Plasma 6.7, KWin supports the Wayland session-management protocol. KDE describes this as an important step toward applications remembering their window sizes and positions after a system restart.

KWin’s support alone does not make every Wayland application restore its previous windows. The relevant toolkits, libraries, and individual applications also need to implement support. KDE’s report identifies that work as the next step, but does not provide an app-by-app compatibility list or claim uniform restoration. If restore behavior matters to your workflow, the available information does not establish whether a particular application supports it.

How this fits KDE’s Wayland direction
In a November 26, 2025 project statement, the Plasma team said Plasma 6.8 would be Wayland-exclusive, meaning the Plasma X11 login session would no longer be included. KDE also said X11 applications would generally continue to run through Xwayland. The team expected to support the Plasma X11 session into early 2027, while qualifying that timing: the specific end date depended on whether more Plasma 6.7 bug-fix releases were shipped. This was KDE’s stated plan in November 2025, not a fixed end date or a claim that X11 applications themselves would stop working.

If you regularly use multiple monitors and want their desktops to change independently, the first feature directly addresses that workflow. If your priority is having applications return to their previous window sizes and positions after a restart, the second feature is a step toward that result, but the sources do not establish a universal or app-specific restore experience.
