What does “N-way” mean on an Ethernet switch?
In a LevelOne datasheet, “N-Way” is used in the names of 5-port and 8-port SOHO switches. The same datasheet describes auto-negotiation and the switch learning which stations are connected to which ports. That example shows how a manufacturer uses the wording; it does not establish a universal definition of “N-way.” Read the term alongside the product’s stated specifications rather than treating it as a promise of a particular number of ports. LevelOne product datasheet.
What an Ethernet switch does
An Ethernet switch connects devices or LAN segments and handles traffic at the data-link layer, commonly called Layer 2. It learns which stations are reachable through its ports by observing source MAC addresses. It then uses destination MAC addresses and its learned forwarding information to decide which port should receive a frame, or whether the frame should be filtered. IEEE describes MAC bridges as allowing end stations on separate LANs to communicate as if they were attached to the same LAN. IEEE Standards Association’s IEEE 802-2024 page; IEEE Technology Navigator’s LAN interconnection overview.
How a switch differs from a router
A switch or bridge forwards traffic within a bridged LAN using MAC-layer information. A router forwards traffic between IP networks at the network layer. The two devices may both be part of a home or office network, but they perform different forwarding roles. IEEE’s standards material describes the bridged-network function and its relationship to the MAC service. IEEE 802.1Q-2022: Bridges and Bridged Networks.

Where VLANs and standards fit
IEEE lists IEEE 802.1Q-2022, “Bridges and Bridged Networks,” as active. Its scope includes the operation of MAC bridges and VLAN bridges; the IEEE page also lists amendments through 802.1Qdy-2025. That standards context does not mean every Ethernet switch supports VLANs or offers user-configurable VLAN management. Those capabilities depend on the individual model. What to check when choosing a switch
The phrase “Ethernet network switch” is a useful category-level search when you need the device but have not settled on a model. To narrow the choice, compare the features your network actually needs:
Rank #2
- GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS: Features 5 x 1.0Gbps Ethernet ports for high-speed connectivity. Auto-negotiating ports detect the optimal speed for connected devices and work with existing Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables.
- PLUG-AND-PLAY UNMANAGED NETWORK SWITCH: Simple plug-and-play setup with no software to install or configuration required.
- FLEXIBLE MOUNTING OPTIONS: Compact metal design supports desktop or wall-mount placement for versatile installation.
- SILENT & ENERGY-EFFICIENT OPERATION: Fanless design ensures silent performance, while IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet reduces power consumption without compromising high-speed network performance.
- REGIONAL COMPATIBILITY: Made for use in U.S. & CA only
- Port count: allow for the devices you need to connect, with room for likely additions.
- Link speed: check the speed of the switch ports against your devices and network connection.
- PoE: confirm whether you need Power over Ethernet to power connected equipment, and whether a candidate model supports it.
- Management and VLANs: decide whether you need configurable features such as VLANs; support varies by model.
The title alone does not establish a required port count, speed, PoE capability, or management feature, so “N-way” is not enough to choose a suitable model.
