Ethernet is wired local-area networking; Wi-Fi is wireless local-area networking. They are different technologies, not interchangeable names. A router or access point can connect Wi-Fi devices to a wired Ethernet network, but an Ethernet cable does not turn into a Wi-Fi signal.
What do Ethernet and Wi-Fi mean?
Ethernet
Ethernet is a family of wired networking technologies used for communication on a local-area network (LAN). IEEE describes Ethernet as covering physical- and data-link-layer specifications. Its implementations can use different physical media, including twisted-pair cable and fiber; Ethernet does not mean one particular cable, connector, or speed. IEEE Technology Navigator defines Ethernet as a family of wired technologies for LAN communication.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is the familiar term for wireless LAN networking. IEEE 802.11 specifies the wireless LAN medium access control (MAC) and physical-layer (PHY) functions. Rather than carrying the link over a physical cable, Wi-Fi communicates over radio within the reach of the wireless network.
What is the difference between Ethernet and Wi-Fi?
| Feature | Ethernet | Wi-Fi |
|---|---|---|
| Connection medium | A wired physical medium, such as twisted-pair cable or fiber | Radio |
| IEEE standards family | IEEE 802.3 | IEEE 802.11 |
| What a device needs to connect | A suitable wired path and compatible Ethernet port or adapter | A compatible wireless connection within the network’s coverage |
| Mobility | Constrained by the wired connection | Allows a device to connect without a cable, within coverage |
Both belong to the broader IEEE 802 family of local and metropolitan area network standards, but they specify different kinds of network links. The standards identify the technologies; they do not establish a universal winner for speed, latency, reliability, or security. Actual results depend on the specific equipment, connection, and environment.

Can Ethernet connect to Wi-Fi?
Yes. A network can include both wired and wireless devices. In a common arrangement, a router or wireless access point connects Wi-Fi clients to an Ethernet segment, allowing them to participate in the same local network. The exact layout varies: the key point is that a device or network function bridges the wireless and wired portions. The cable itself does not emit Wi-Fi.
Does Ethernet mean a particular cable or speed?
No. Ethernet is a technology family, not a synonym for one cable category, plug, or fixed data rate. The right physical connection depends on the Ethernet equipment and implementation. A patch cable can provide a wired Ethernet link when the devices have compatible ports; it is not required for Wi-Fi and does not convert Ethernet into wireless networking.

Which connection should you use?
Choose based on how the device must connect and what the particular network supports. Ethernet requires a compatible port and a wired route to the network. Wi-Fi avoids that cable run and supports mobility within coverage. For performance or security decisions, compare the actual equipment and conditions rather than relying on a blanket claim that one technology is always faster, safer, or more dependable.
- Use Ethernet when the device and network have compatible wired ports and a cable route is practical.
- Use Wi-Fi when a wireless connection is more convenient and the device is within the network’s coverage.
- Use both when the network connects wireless clients and wired devices through suitable networking equipment.
What standards define them?
IEEE 802.3 is the Ethernet standards family, while IEEE 802.11 specifies wireless LAN MAC and PHY functions. IEEE’s standards listing identifies IEEE 802.11-2024 as active and says it incorporates amendments published from 2021 through 2024; standards status can change. The cited IEEE 802.3-2015 page is marked superseded, so it describes Ethernet’s scope and media but should not be treated as the current edition.
