If you want an RPG that does not make your appeal depend on a prophecy or a destined-savior role, start with Wartales or You Are Not the Chosen One. Tyranny is a strong fit if you want political power without being the prophesied hero, while Roadwarden suits players drawn to a text-led journey where combat is not the central activity. These games offer different versions of “not the chosen one”—and not all of them keep the protagonist socially ordinary.
Which RPG should you choose?
| Game | Starting role or format | How it avoids the chosen-one premise | Best fit if you want |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wartales | Leader of a mercenary group | Its official description says you are not destined to bring a new era of peace. | Mercenary work, group management, and a search for wealth. |
| Tyranny | An officer with resources and authority | The tyrant has already won; the player chooses sides and influences law and order rather than fulfilling a classic savior prophecy. | Political agency and meaningful power without the chosen-hero setup. |
| Roadwarden | An illustrated, text-based RPG; the retrieved developer description does not establish a more specific social status for the protagonist. | It is an adjacent fit: its developer emphasizes a broader story in which violence is not the most prevalent or important activity. | A narrative-centered journey with more than combat. |
| You Are Not the Chosen One | A lone adventurer, described as a “nobody” in its Steam listing. | The store description directly says the fate of the world is someone else’s problem. | The most literal rejection of the chosen-one trope. |
RPGs that put work, power, or story ahead of prophecy
Wartales: lead a mercenary company
Wartales is the clearest choice if you want a group-centered livelihood instead of a calling to save the world. Its official game page describes an open-world RPG in which you lead mercenaries searching for wealth, and states: “You are not the hero of this story, destined to usher in a new era of peace.” That premise is a direct answer to the chosen-one trope: the party’s work and prospects, not a prophecy, define its starting point.

The official description establishes that premise, not a ranking of the game’s quality or difficulty. Choose it for the mercenary-company setup rather than assuming that a less prophetic story necessarily means low stakes.
Tyranny: exercise authority after the tyrant wins
Tyranny changes the usual fantasy setup by beginning after the tyrant has won. Paradox describes an original story shaped by player actions: you choose sides and influence law and order. The player is not a random villager who rises into power; Paradox calls the protagonist “an instrumental officer with considerable resources and authority” on its official game page.
#1 Best Overall
- Features of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars
- All background illustrations have been upgraded to HD & updated effects breath new life into pixel art
- New environmental sounds effects to immerse yourself in this fantasy world
- Battle SFX are also now HD and add a new level of realism
- Newly added Auto-Save, Battle Fast Forward, and Conversation Log
That makes Tyranny a good fit if you want substantial political agency without the classic destined-hero role. It is not an ordinary-person story: power and responsibility are part of the protagonist’s position from the outset.
Roadwarden: follow a text-led journey
Roadwarden is an illustrated, text-based RPG. Its developer says violence is “just one of many activities” in the larger story, and neither the most prevalent nor the most important one. The developer’s description supports recommending it to readers seeking a narrative-centered experience rather than a combat-first one.

- The games that inspired a generation come to life once more, in the ultimate 2D pixel remaster!
- These games are newly developed remaster editions based on the original titles. Some of the changes and additional elements found in other remakes of these games are not included.
- The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.
- Universally updated 2D pixel graphics, including the iconic FINAL FANTASY character designs created by Kazuko Shibuya, the original artist and current collaborator.
- Beautifully rearranged soundtrack in a faithful FINAL FANTASY style, overseen by original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
The available description does not establish the protagonist’s social status or explicitly say that they are not chosen by fate. Treat Roadwarden as an adjacent fit based on its format and story emphasis, rather than as a confirmed ordinary-person premise.
You Are Not the Chosen One: the most literal match
The Steam listing describes You Are Not the Chosen One as “An old school, single-player RPG where the fate of the world is someone else’s problem” and calls the player a “nobody, a lone adventurer.” That makes it the most direct match to the request, according to the Steam listing.

- Total Warfare Edition includes additional playable characters, mini-games, and content previously available as DLC
- Combines roguelike-style deckbuilding with turn-based SRPGs for a brand-new experience
- Over 100 cards to collect and build a deck with, all with unique designs
Those details describe the store listing’s premise. They do not establish hands-on quality, critical reception, or availability beyond what the listing itself shows.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide what “not the chosen one” means to you
- You want a job and a group to manage: pick Wartales, whose official description centers on leading mercenaries in search of wealth.
- You want power without a savior prophecy: pick Tyranny, where an already-empowered officer acts in a world ruled by a victorious tyrant.
- You want a story-led experience where violence is not the main point: consider Roadwarden, keeping in mind that its retrieved description does not make a specific claim about chosen status.
- You want the premise to say it outright: consider You Are Not the Chosen One, whose Steam description frames the world’s fate as someone else’s problem.
People may phrase this preference as wanting “RPGs about ordinary people” or games without “the ‘chosen one’ or the ‘main character’” [c5]. Those are examples of reader wording, not evidence that every game above features an ordinary protagonist. The useful distinction is whether a game replaces prophecy with a livelihood, starts from an unusual position of authority, or simply puts narrative and other activities ahead of combat.
