A year of using an app can reveal whether it genuinely helps—or whether you have simply learned to work around it. But the title alone does not identify the app, the person using it, or the tasks they hoped to improve. Without those particulars, a first-person verdict would be invented. A useful account must show what the app was meant to do, what happened during ordinary use, and what changed over the year.
What “a year of real use” needs to establish
Start by naming the app, the platform or device, your role, and the period you are describing. Say what you hoped the app would help you accomplish. “I used it for a year” is not enough to explain whether it worked: a calendar used by a freelancer to schedule client work has a different job from one used by a family to coordinate appointments.
Define the period honestly. If you used the app from a particular month to the same month the following year, give those dates. If the year is approximate, say so. Distinguish regular use from a year in which you opened the app only occasionally; frequency and setting shape what the experience can show.
Describe the routine, not just the feature list
Choose two or three recurring tasks that mattered to you and explain how you handled them in real circumstances. For each task, say what you tried to do, whether you completed it, what effort or workaround it required, and whether the result met your needs. Include a failure or abandoned task if one changed how you used the app.

- Task success: Did you complete the task accurately and fully, or did you still need another tool or a manual check?
- Effort: What time, attention, steps, or other resources did the task demand? If you did not track them, describe your impression as recollection, not as a measured result.
- Experience: Did the app meet your expectations in the situations that mattered to you? Note recurring frustration or confidence as well as convenience.
These are distinct dimensions. ISO 9241-11:2018 defines usability as “the extent to which a system, product or service can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.” The framework is explained in ISO’s page for ISO 9241-11:2018; the definition is also included in official material for ISO 9241-115:2024.
Separate changes in the app from changes in you
A year can change both the software and its user. A task may get easier because an update improved the app, because you learned a shortcut, or because you changed your routine. Those are different explanations. Where you can, anchor a comparison to an early example and a later one, then identify the app version or update date if you know it.

For example, a credible before-and-after account might explain that an early workflow required a particular workaround, while a later update removed it—or that the workflow stayed the same but became easier after you learned it. Use a dated note, version history, or a specific remembered incident when available. If you have no records, say that the comparison is based on memory. Do not turn a personal impression into a precise time saving or a claim about what the app changed.
Explain the context behind the verdict
Usability depends on the users, their goals and tasks, available resources, and the environment in which they use a product. Mention context that affected your experience: for example, whether you used the app alone or with others, on which devices, under time pressure, or with limited connectivity. A successful fit for one person and routine does not establish that the app will suit everyone.

If you compare versions or alternatives, use the same tasks and circumstances for each. Compare completion and accuracy, effort, errors and recovery, satisfaction, and fit for your devices and environment. These are useful ways to organize an account, not proof that you ran a formal test. NIST describes usability testing as having representative users perform representative tasks and collecting measures such as time, errors, and task completion alongside qualitative comments and preferences; see NIST’s overview of usability testing. Unless you actually conducted such testing, label your evidence as personal experience rather than test results.

End by answering the practical question: would you keep using the app for the same purpose and in the same circumstances? Say who your experience may help—such as people with a similar goal, routine, or device setup—and identify the limitation that would matter most to them. A useful verdict can be positive, mixed, or negative; it should follow from the tasks and examples you described, not from a general impression that the app is “good” or “bad.”
