Independent reviewers describe a light, responsive ride that feels more natural and stable than PUMA’s more aggressive Fast-R 3, but fit is individual and the shoe’s limited outsole rubber leaves long-term wear uncertain. At its premium price, it makes the most sense for runners who want one race shoe for varied distances and prefer a quick transition over an especially aggressive feel.
Is the PUMA Deviate NITRO Elite 4 worth it?
It can be worth considering if you want a lightweight plated racer for road racing from 5K through the marathon and value an approachable ride. PUMA classifies it as a neutral race-day shoe for those distances, while its launch announcement specifically highlights high-cadence runners. Those are intended-use descriptions, not evidence that the shoe will improve every runner’s pace.
The Elite 4 is not a general-purpose daily trainer. Its race-focused construction, light upper, and carbon plate suit workouts and race day better than a buyer seeking one durable shoe for all weekly miles. Reviewers found it responsive, but opinions differ on traction and foot shape compatibility, and available wear observations are too limited to predict its lifespan.

- FuelCell midsole foam with approximately 3% bio-based content delivers a propulsive feel to help drive you forward. Bio-based content is made from renewable resources to help reduce our carbon footprint.
- Energy Arc pairs sport-specific carbon fiber plate geometry with strategic midsole voids, designed to increase stored energy to deliver a higher amount of total energy returned
- Angular midsole design reduces weight
- Outsole designed for superior traction
- 4 mm drop; due to variances created during the development and manufacturing processes, all references to 4 mm drop are approximate
What are the specs and what does the shoe weigh?
PUMA’s launch announcement lists a 32 mm forefoot and 40 mm heel stack, an 8 mm drop, and weights of 170 g in UK size 8 and 140 g in UK size 4.5. PUMA’s US listing also gives an 8 mm drop. These are manufacturer figures; weight changes with shoe size.
Independent measurements should not be treated as universal specifications. RunRepeat measured 173 g in its sample and recorded an 8.9 mm drop in its lab, compared with PUMA’s stated 8 mm. Tom’s Guide reports 6.2 oz for its US men’s size 9.5. The figures use different sizes and methods, so they are not direct like-for-like comparisons.
PUMA says the Elite 4 is 12% lighter than its predecessor. That percentage is the manufacturer’s claim on its US product page, not an independently established comparison in the cited reviews.

- The mesh upper offers a comfortable, breathable feel.
- The foam midsole delivers intuitive cushioning through comfort-focused rocker geometry.
- The outsole has an intuitive Nike design and flex grooves in the forefoot that create a comfortable and cushioned effect as you run.
- Touch points at the heel and tongue create a natural feel as you take the shoes on and off.

How do the foam and carbon plate feel?
PUMA describes an upgraded NITROFOAM Elite midsole and reengineered PWRPLATE, saying the plate is designed to direct energy forward. That is a design claim, not a measured physiological benefit. Tom’s Guide describes two layers of nitrogen-infused aliphatic TPU foam, with a softer upper layer, and a full-length carbon plate.
In Tom’s Guide’s testing, the shoe had a quick transition and punchy toe-off. That reviewer also found it more natural and stable than the PUMA Fast-R 3. RunRepeat characterizes the Elite 4 as stiff and neutral. Together, those accounts suggest a responsive plated ride that is less extreme in feel than PUMA’s more aggressive racer, though whether the firmness and rocker suit you is personal.
How does the Deviate NITRO Elite 4 fit?
Fit reports are generally encouraging but do not settle the question for every foot. RunRepeat’s owner responses say true to size, though its lab assessment describes the fit as snug. Tom’s Guide recommends a runner’s usual running-shoe size and says those who routinely fall between sizes may prefer the smaller one. Believe in the Run reviewers also report true-to-size fits, with one reviewer noting room for a wider foot.

- Engineered mesh upper: Improves breathability
- GUIDESOLE technology: Helps create smooth toe-offs and advanced energy savings
- FF BLAST MAX cushioning: Our most energetic midsole foam is complemented with cloud-like softness and a responsive energy return
- FF BLAST PLUS: One of our lightest and most energetic foams that's formed with at least 20% bio-based material from renewable sources
- OrthoLite X-55 sockliner: Provides soft step-in comfort
The upper is deliberately light and minimally padded. Tom’s Guide’s tester said it held securely without hot spots during their use, while noting sparse padding at the tongue and heel. If you have a particular width or volume concern, try your usual size where possible and check the seller’s return policy rather than assuming reviewers’ fit will match yours.
Can you run a marathon in the PUMA Deviate NITRO Elite 4?
Yes. PUMA lists the shoe for races from 5K to marathon, and its construction is intended for race-day use. Whether it is right for your marathon depends on how its fit and ride feel over long runs; the reviews establish tester impressions, not a guarantee of comfort or performance for every runner.

What are the durability and traction trade-offs?
The lightweight upper and sparse padding are part of the race-oriented design, but RunRepeat flags poor toe-box durability in its assessment. On the outsole, RunRepeat describes durability as decent, while Tom’s Guide notes limited rubber coverage. Its tester reported no significant wear on exposed areas after 40 miles, but explicitly said monitoring would continue. That single report is not enough to estimate shoe lifespan or make a mileage-life prediction.
Grip impressions are mixed. Tom’s Guide’s tester reported reliable grip in wet conditions, while Believe in the Run’s reviewer felt PUMAGRIP was less tacky than expected. If wet-road traction is a priority, those differing experiences make an in-person or retailer-return-supported trial more useful than a categorical promise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does it compare with the PUMA Fast-R 3 and Elite 3?
The available reviews support a limited comparison, not a complete head-to-head test. Tom’s Guide found the Elite 4 more natural and stable than the Fast-R 3; Believe in the Run similarly characterized it as the safer option while preferring a more pronounced toespring. In practical terms, the Elite 4 may suit runners who want a plated racer without the same aggressive sensation. A runner who prefers a more pronounced rocker may favor the feel described for the alternative instead.

- Engineered knit upper: A lightweight, breathable knit material that reduces the need for additional overlays.
- PureGEL technology: Softer, updated version of our GEL technology that maintains all the acclaimed properties that have made GEL technology famous. Approximately 65% softer vs standard GEL technology.
- FF BLAST PLUS cushioning: Midsole foam that provides a blend of cloud like cushioning and a responsive ride that is lighter than FF BLAST.
- OrthoLite X-55 sockliner: Premium sockliner that provides cushioning performance and moisture management for a cooler, dryer environment.
- Reflective details: Visibility for enhanced nightime and early-morning reflective brightness.
PUMA says the Elite 4 is 12% lighter than the Elite 3, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than a matched independent measurement. The available sources do not establish a controlled performance advantage between the generations. When comparing either model, check the same size and measurement method, then consider ride, fit, outsole coverage, local price, and availability rather than relying on weight alone.
Who should choose the Elite 4?
- Consider it if you want a neutral, carbon-plated road racer for a range of race distances and favor a light, responsive shoe with a relatively natural transition.
- Try it carefully if you have a wide or unusually shaped foot, since fit impressions vary and the upper is minimally padded.
- Look elsewhere or compare directly if you want a more aggressive rocker, substantial outsole coverage, or a shoe whose long-term durability is established.
