Self-propelled walk-behind mowers can reduce the effort of moving a mower across the lawn, but that convenience comes with trade-offs: they generally cost more than comparable push mowers, may have heavier frames, and can involve more upkeep depending on their power source and drive system. These drawbacks do not apply equally to every model.
1. Do self-propelled mowers cost more?
Generally, yes. A 2019 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission staff market analysis found that self-propelled mowers generally cost more than push mowers from the same brand and with the same power type. The difference depends on factors such as mower size, brand, and features, so compare current models on a like-for-like basis rather than assuming a set surcharge. CPSC staff market analysis (November 26, 2019)
The analysis also cited a range of about $200–$600 for walk-behind power mowers generally at the time. That historical range is neither a current price guide nor a self-propelled-only price range.

- Compare the same power type—gas with gas, or battery with battery.
- Match deck size and included features where possible.
- Check current prices; the 2019 analysis does not establish today’s price premium.
2. Are self-propelled mowers heavier?
They can be. Virginia Tech’s training guide says self-propelled front- or rear-wheel-drive models use higher-capacity engines and heavier frames. It does not establish a universal weight difference, so check each mower’s listed weight rather than relying on the drive label alone. Virginia Tech training guide

Powered wheels help move the mower while cutting, which can offset the weight during mowing. Weight matters more when lifting the mower into a vehicle, carrying it, or moving it into storage. Those tasks are practical considerations, not proof that every self-propelled mower is harder to use overall.
3. Do self-propelled mowers need more maintenance?
It depends on the mower’s power source and drive system. The self-propelled label alone does not determine the service schedule.

- Exclusive and industry-leading CVT (Continuously variable transmission) offers superior speed variability to adjust the mower pace to your walking speed by simply selecting the 6-speed shift lever
- Exclusive rubber tires with aggressive spiked tread pattern significantly increase overall traction and maneuverability
- Starting made easier with the automatic choke system, no need to prime or choke the engine
- Quickly clean the underside of the cutting deck with the deck cleanout port
- Single-lever deck adjustment for quickly setting your mow height
Gas models require engine care
Gas-powered walk-behind mowers need routine engine maintenance. UF/IFAS describes service involving oil, filters, and spark plugs; owners should follow the intervals and procedures in their particular mower’s manual. UF/IFAS: Mower Maintenance

UF/IFAS recommends regularly sharpening and balancing rotary mower blades. Its general guidance is to sharpen at least twice a year, but the right frequency can vary with lawn size, grass, and how often the mower is used. Follow safe-service instructions in the owner’s manual. UF/IFAS: Mower Maintenance

- MORE CUTTING POWER: Powerful 170cc 4-stroke OHV engine delivers reliable performance for thick grass and larger yards. Auto choke and recoil start make starting easy.
- LESS PUSHING EFFORT: Self-propelled rear-wheel drive provides better traction on slopes and uneven terrain, reducing pushing effort.
- WIDER CUTS: Wide 22-inch cutting path helps finish mowing faster, while the durable steel deck and heavy-duty blade are built to last season after season.
- VERSATILE 3-IN-1 SYSTEM: Choose between mulching, rear bagging, or rear discharge to match changing lawn conditions.
- EASY HEIGHT CHANGES: Easily adjust cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for different mowing needs.
Transmission upkeep varies by design
Virginia Tech notes high initial and maintenance costs for hydrostatic transmission systems. That warning is conditional: not every self-propelled walk-behind mower uses a hydrostatic system, and the guide discusses mower transmission systems broadly, including riding equipment. Check the listed drive or transmission type and its service requirements before comparing models. Virginia Tech training guide
Power-source limits are model-specific
Battery runtime is a limitation of battery-powered electric mowers, not of self-propulsion itself. OSU Extension identifies limited runtime as a consideration for battery models; check the manufacturer’s stated runtime and assess it against your lawn and mowing conditions. Gas models avoid that particular battery-runtime constraint but have engine upkeep needs. OSU Extension: Choosing a Lawn Mower (published March 2025; reviewed 2025)

- 3-IN-1 CUTTING OPTIONS – Choose mulching, rear bagging or rear discharge. The large 60L grass bag holds more clippings and reduces emptying.
- 6-POSITION HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT – Easily adjust cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for different mowing needs.
What to check before choosing one
Compare a push mower and a self-propelled model against the way you will store, transport, and maintain it—not just how it moves across the lawn. UF/IFAS identifies lawn size, turfgrass species, and maintenance level as factors in mower selection. UF/IFAS: Mower Selection

- Price: Compare current, similar models by power type, deck size, brand, and features.
- Weight: Check the listed weight if you need to lift or carry the mower.
- Power source: For battery models, consider runtime; for gas models, account for engine service.
- Drive system: Identify the transmission type where the manufacturer lists it, and check its maintenance requirements.
- Blade care: Account for regular sharpening and balancing, following the owner’s manual.
Walk-behind power mowers covered by the U.S. consumer product safety standard must meet 16 CFR Part 1205. That standard does not remove blade hazards; use the mower according to its manual. CPSC: Lawn Mower Safety Standard FAQs
