Yes—a Windows computer infected with the DualToy trojan could use a USB connection to interact with certain connected Android and iOS devices. The 2016 report describes specific conditions: the Android path relied on USB debugging (ADB) and could reuse a computer the phone had already authorized; the iOS path could reuse an existing device-pairing record. It does not mean that connecting a phone to any Windows PC automatically infects it, and the reviewed sources do not establish that DualToy is active or widespread today.

What DualToy was—and what the report established

DualToy was a Windows malware family analyzed by Palo Alto Networks Unit 42. In a report published September 13, 2016, Unit 42 described samples that used the infected Windows computer and USB connections to reach mobile devices. MITRE ATT&CK also catalogs DualToy as Windows malware that could install malicious applications on connected Android and iOS devices.

The findings describe analyzed samples, not necessarily every version of the malware. They are a historical case study, not evidence of a current outbreak: the reviewed sources do not establish DualToy’s present-day activity or prevalence. Unit 42’s technical analysis and MITRE ATT&CK’s DualToy entry document the case.

How the USB connection enabled mobile-device access

Android: ADB and prior computer authorization

Unit 42 reported that DualToy could download and install Android Debug Bridge (ADB) drivers, monitor for connected Android devices, and install applications in the background. The described Android functionality assumed that ADB debugging was enabled. If the user had previously authorized that computer, DualToy could reuse authorization key files stored on the Windows PC.

A later Android sample described in the report went further: it copied and executed native code on the connected device and installed a trojanized component Unit 42 called RootAngel. These behaviors should not be generalized to every DualToy sample.

iOS: existing pairing records

For iOS, Unit 42 described DualToy using iTunes drivers and existing pairing records to communicate with a connected device. The analyzed code collected and transmitted identifying device information: device name, model, UUID, serial number, IMEI, SIM IMSI and ICCID, and phone number. This is what the report documented for those samples; it is not a complete description of current iOS security behavior.

MITRE ATT&CK categorizes the mobile behavior under technique T1458, Replication Through Removable Media. Its T1458 page provides a broader security framework for understanding the behavior, rather than evidence that DualToy remains active.

What the documented behavior could mean for a user

  • On Android: background installation of applications, and, in one later sample described by Unit 42, execution of copied native code and installation of RootAngel.
  • On iOS: collection and transmission of identifying information from a device connected to a Windows computer with a usable pairing record.
  • For both platforms: the risk depended on malware running on the Windows host and on the access mechanisms described in the report. A cable by itself was not the infection mechanism.

How to reduce risk when connecting or charging a phone

When connecting to a computer

  • Use a computer you trust. Avoid connecting a phone to an unknown or untrusted host.
  • Decline unexpected trust or pairing prompts. Approve a computer only when you recognize it and need the connection.
  • On Android, turn off USB debugging when you do not need it. Avoid authorizing debugging on computers you do not control.
  • Keep the phone’s operating system and applications updated. Keep endpoint protection current on computers that connect to or debug mobile devices.

NIST’s Mobile Threat Catalogue describes the general exposure this way: “When connected through USB, potentially malicious applications can be installed on the mobile device, sometimes without the user’s knowledge.” Its guidance recommends updates, endpoint protection, monitoring systems that synchronize with or debug phones, disabling ADB debugging when it is not in use, and refusing trust prompts from untrusted systems. The catalogue includes platform guidance tied to historical versions, so its general precautions—not old version-specific advice—are relevant here. NIST Mobile Threat Catalogue, STA-6.

When charging away from home

For charging from an electrical outlet, NIST advises using a charger that plugs directly into the wall rather than a potentially malicious public USB charging station or computer port. This changes the connection choice; it is not a malware detector, and it cannot neutralize a phone or computer that is already compromised. When a data connection is unnecessary, prefer a trusted wall charger over an unfamiliar computer or charging station.

Microsoft’s general Windows guidance likewise advises against plugging in unknown USB devices and recommends scanning an unknown removable device if it is connected. That is broad removable-media advice, not a claim that scanning a phone or charger detects DualToy. See Microsoft’s malware guidance.

What defenders can monitor

MITRE ATT&CK’s detection concept for T1458 is to correlate a physical device connection or newly trusted pairing with a transition into USB debugging or file-transfer activity, followed by application installation, file replication, or data extraction. This is a defensive monitoring pattern, not a consumer diagnostic: observing one of these events alone does not confirm a DualToy infection.
