ATMii was malware documented by Kaspersky in 2017 that could make a compromised ATM dispense a specified amount of cash. Its capability was not evidence that a known number of machines had been emptied: the reviewed reporting gives no ATMii-specific victim count, confirmed losses or prevalence estimate.
What ATMii was—and what the headline means
Kaspersky said an industry partner shared ATMii samples in April 2017. The security company published its technical analysis, “ATMii: a small but effective ATM robber,” on October 10, 2017. SecurityWeek reported the finding that day in “New ATMii Malware Can Empty ATMs.”
The headline describes a technical capability: ATMii could issue commands that requested cash from an ATM’s dispenser. It does not establish that ATMii emptied a measured number of machines or caused a documented amount of losses. The available reporting also does not establish a current ATMii campaign.
How ATMii could command cash dispensing
Kaspersky described two components: an injector executable named exe.exe and a payload library named dll.dll. The injector targeted atmapp.exe, the ATM’s proprietary application process, to place the library inside it. The injected code then interacted with the ATM’s XFS cash-unit service, the software interface used to communicate with cash-handling hardware.

At a high level, the malware’s documented functions let an operator check for the cash-unit service, request a specified amount in a specified currency, and retrieve information about the cash cassettes. This is why ATMii could make an ATM dispense cash: it targeted the ATM software path that communicates with the dispenser, rather than manipulating a customer’s bank balance.
Kaspersky also documented that the injector could load and unload the library and write commands to a local command file. Those details describe the analyzed sample; they are not evidence of a universal deployment method or instructions for operating the malware.

What access ATMii needed
Kaspersky said ATMii required direct access to the target ATM, either over a network or physically—for example, through USB. The analysis does not establish one initial-compromise route for every infection, and it does not describe ATMii as malware that spread autonomously. Its functionality therefore depended on an attacker first gaining access to the ATM.
ATMii compared with issuer-side cash-out fraud
“Cash-out” can describe a different kind of attack. PCI Security Standards Council and ATM Industry Association guidance discusses schemes that target bank or processor systems so criminals can manipulate account balances or withdrawal limits, then coordinate cash withdrawals. That is distinct from ATMii’s direct interaction with ATM software and the dispenser.

The comparison is grounded in Kaspersky’s ATMii analysis and the joint PCI SSC and ATMIA cash-out bulletin. Similar outcomes—cash leaving an ATM—do not mean the attacks use the same compromised systems or defenses.

Kaspersky’s conclusion recommends default-deny policies and device control. In practical terms, these controls address the two access paths described in its analysis:
- Default-deny application control: Allow only authorized software to run on the ATM’s internal PC, reducing the chance that an unauthorized executable or library can run.
- Device control: Restrict unauthorized hardware, including USB devices, from connecting to the ATM.
These are defensive recommendations, not a guarantee that an ATM cannot be compromised. Operators need to apply them within their ATM environment and security operations. NCR Atleos describes endpoint security software for ATMs; that vendor description is not independent evidence that a particular product prevents ATMii or is compatible with every ATM estate.
