Three of the four LulzSec members sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on May 16, 2013, received immediate prison terms. Mustafa Al-Bassam received a 20-month suspended sentence, which did not require him to go to prison immediately. The other sentences, reported by AFP, were 32 months for Ryan Cleary, 30 months for Ryan Ackroyd and two years for Jake Davis.
What sentences did the four LulzSec members receive?
AFP reported the following outcomes at Southwark Crown Court in London. The reports say all four defendants admitted offences under the Computer Misuse Act 1990.
| Defendant | Reported sentence | Immediate custody? |
|---|---|---|
| Ryan Cleary | 32 months’ imprisonment | Yes |
| Ryan Ackroyd | 30 months’ imprisonment | Yes |
| Jake Davis | Two years’ imprisonment | Yes |
| Mustafa Al-Bassam | 20-month suspended sentence | No; suspended sentences do not mean immediate imprisonment |
The available reports do not give the complete indictment, each defendant’s plea basis, the formal court order or a full account of the judge’s reasoning. They therefore do not support a detailed comparison of each person’s charges or individual role.
What conduct was described in the case?
The AFP accounts describe LulzSec as an offshoot of Anonymous that operated in 2011 and used public announcements and leaked material to draw attention. They summarize activity involving Sony Pictures, the CIA website, The Sun, the NHS and the Serious Organised Crime Agency. The reports refer to distributed denial-of-service attacks and information posted without encryption.
