Yes—Claude Code can run on a schedule without someone typing each prompt live. The practical route is Anthropic’s Claude Code GitHub Action in a GitHub Actions workflow, or the non-interactive CLI command claude -p inside a script that you schedule yourself. A scheduled run can investigate or change code, but it is not a guaranteed fix: inspect its logs and changes, and review any pull request before merging.

How scheduled Claude Code automation works

Anthropic’s Claude Code GitHub Actions guide describes two modes. With a prompt configured in the workflow, the action runs automatically when its configured GitHub event occurs, including on a cron schedule. Without a prompt, it can instead wait for a person to mention @claude in an issue or pull-request interaction.

In automation mode, the workflow supplies the task and determines when Claude runs. The prompt does not itself grant access to a shell, GitHub API, or repository write operations. You must configure the needed tools, permissions, and authentication for the task. A scheduled run is therefore best treated as a bounded coding job—not as an unrestricted agent with blanket access.

Choose the right way to run it

Approach Trigger and runtime Permissions and authentication Monitoring and cost controls
GitHub Actions GitHub events or a cron schedule; executes on a GitHub Actions runner. The workflow configuration is in the repository, and scheduled workflows run from its default branch. Anthropic’s example runs a daily report at 09:00 UTC. Configure workflow permissions and tools for the specific job. Keep API keys or OAuth tokens in GitHub Secrets; workload identity federation is another option in supported organizational setups. Inspect the Actions run log and resulting diff or pull request. Control runner-minute use with workflow timeouts and concurrency settings; limit model work with a concise prompt and turn cap.
Non-interactive CLI Run claude -p "..." from a script or pipeline. You arrange the scheduler and execution environment; they are not supplied by the CLI command itself. Set up authentication and configure permissions appropriate to the runtime and task. The CLI reference documents permission modes and the --permission-prompt-tool and --permission-prompts controls for non-interactive runs. Capture the script’s output and review code changes through your own pipeline. Bound model activity with --max-turns; manage runtime limits and concurrency in the scheduler or CI system.

Use GitHub Actions when the task belongs with repository events, GitHub permissions, and Actions logs. Choose the CLI route when you need to incorporate Claude into an existing script or pipeline and can operate its scheduler and runtime. Anthropic’s CLI reference explains non-interactive execution and permission controls.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Set up a scheduled job in GitHub Actions

  1. Choose a recurring, bounded task. For example, ask Claude to inspect a specific area for a class of defect and propose a focused change. State what files or behavior are in scope, what evidence to report, and whether it should open a pull request. Avoid vague instructions such as “fix all bugs.”
  2. Add a workflow to the repository. Create or edit a workflow file under .github/workflows/. Configure a schedule trigger using GitHub’s cron syntax and supply the Claude prompt as an action input. The workflow runs from the default branch; Anthropic’s example uses 09:00 UTC for a daily report.
  3. Provide authentication securely. Put API credentials or OAuth tokens in repository or organization secrets and reference them from the workflow. Do not put credentials directly in the workflow file. For supported organizational setups, Anthropic also describes workload identity federation as a way to avoid long-lived credentials.
  4. Grant only the access the task needs. Set the workflow’s GitHub token permissions narrowly and enable only the tools needed for the job. A report that only reads repository data can use read access; editing files or creating a pull request requires the corresponding write permissions and tools. Do not enable broad access just to make the prompt work.
  5. Set limits before the first run. Use a workflow timeout, an appropriate turn limit, and GitHub concurrency controls to constrain runtime and overlapping jobs. Keep the prompt focused so the task does not expand into unrelated changes.
  6. Inspect the result before merging. Review the Actions log and every changed file. If Claude opens a pull request, assess the diff and run the project’s relevant checks before deciding whether to merge. Automation does not establish that a proposed change is correct.

Scheduling limits and safeguards to know

  • Scheduled workflows depend on repository activity. Anthropic’s guide says GitHub disables scheduled workflows in public repositories after 60 days without repository activity. Check that the workflow is still enabled if a long-idle public repository stops running it.
  • Schedule and interactive triggers have different access checks. The action checks who can trigger a run: issue and pull-request events require a writer by default, while schedule events skip that write-access check. Bot actors are rejected unless allowed, which helps avoid bot-trigger loops.
  • Permissions are explicit. A prompt is an instruction, not a grant of shell or GitHub API access. Configure the capabilities the task requires, and avoid giving Claude broader repository or workflow authority than necessary.
  • Review is part of the workflow. Anthropic recommends reviewing Claude’s changes before merging. A successful job or pull-request creation is not proof that the bug is fixed.

What an automated run costs

Anthropic identifies two usage categories for GitHub Actions runs: GitHub Actions runner minutes and model API tokens. Token use varies with prompt and response length, task complexity, and codebase size, so there is no universal cost estimate. OAuth-authenticated runs use the Claude subscription rather than API billing; applicable rates depend on the billing plan. Use timeouts, concurrency limits, and turn caps to reduce the risk of unexpectedly long or repeated jobs.

Does Claude reliably fix bugs overnight?

The official documentation reviewed here does not publish a measured bug-fix success rate, average time to resolution, or reliability figure for overnight autonomous runs. A schedule determines when a job may start; it does not guarantee that Claude will diagnose the underlying cause, produce a correct patch, or pass your project’s tests. Treat its output as a proposed change that needs normal engineering review and validation.
