The Caps Lock key switches a keyboard’s capitalization-lock state on or off. When it is on, applicable letters are usually entered in uppercase; press the key again to turn it off. The precise effect depends on the keyboard layout and system.
What does the Caps Lock key do?
Caps Lock is both a key and the state it toggles. It is not a character key that enters a symbol by itself. Apple’s developer documentation treats Caps Lock as a modifier flag indicating that the key has been pressed: Apple’s Caps Lock modifier flag.
The X Keyboard Extension specification describes the expected behavior as a logical toggle: “the CapsLock key is that it logically locks when pressed, and then logically unlocks when pressed again.” In other words, a press turns the state on, and a subsequent press turns it off. This is the expected logical behavior, not a guarantee that every keyboard displays the state in the same way. X Keyboard Extension specification, Key Behavior
Which characters change when Caps Lock is on?
Caps Lock usually affects applicable letters, not every character on the keyboard. Its effect on punctuation, numbers, and other keys is not universal; it can vary with the layout and system.

Apple’s 1992 Human Interface Guidelines described the behavior for Roman-language use: Caps Lock has the same effect on alphabetic keys as Shift, but does not affect other keys. That is historical guidance for the context it addressed, not a universal rule for every language or keyboard layout. Apple Human Interface Guidelines (1992)
How can you tell whether Caps Lock is on?
A computer can track and report the toggle state. For example, Microsoft’s .NET Console.CapsLock property reports whether Caps Lock is on or off, but it is Windows-specific: Microsoft notes that calls on other operating systems can raise PlatformNotSupportedException. If letters are unexpectedly uppercase, check whether Caps Lock is active and press the key once to toggle it off. On-screen or physical indicators, if present, depend on the keyboard and system. If the capitalization does not change, the cause may be another input setting or the layout; the Caps Lock key alone does not explain every uppercase-input problem.
