There is no verified, independent alternative to Space Calibrator for using SteamVR Tracking (often called Lighthouse) trackers with Steam Frame. Valve says Steam Frame uses inside-out tracking and that it is not working on base-station support. The clearest software variation is a Linux port of OpenVR Space Calibrator, but its author does not claim Steam Frame compatibility. Treat any setup as unconfirmed and configuration-dependent—not as native support supplied by SteamVR compatibility.

What Valve says about Steam Frame and base stations

Valve’s developer documentation describes Steam Frame as using inside-out tracking. Its compatibility with SteamVR and OpenXR does not, by itself, mean the headset can natively track SteamVR Tracking base stations. In a February 5, 2026 FAQ, Valve answered the question of base-station support: “It’s not something we’re working on, but we built Steam Frame to be modular and extensible so that the community and 3rd parties can build out the features and accessories that are important to them.” The answer leaves room for community or third-party work, but it is not a commitment to a specific accessory or software solution. Valve’s statement, republished by Road to VR.

That distinction matters: mixed-tracking calibration software can align tracking spaces when devices from different systems are present, but it does not turn Steam Frame into a headset with built-in base-station tracking. None of the sources establishes a tested Steam Frame configuration.

What alternatives are actually documented?

Option What it is Documented calibration or systems Steam Frame status
Space Calibrator Reference mixed-tracking utility. Its Steam listing says it is free and supports Windows 10/11. One-time calibration by moving a controller and tracker together; continuous calibration using a tracker attached to the headset. The listing gives Quest and Pico as examples. Not specifically documented for Steam Frame.
Stavdel OpenVR Space Calibrator Community-maintained Linux port of OpenVR Space Calibrator, not a separate alternative. Repository describes setups involving ALVR, SteamVR, Lighthouse, and mixed VR systems. It requires SteamVR and separately launched companion software. Not specifically documented for Steam Frame; results depend on hardware.
Space Calibrator 2.0 open beta A rewrite of Space Calibrator, described by its project page as an open beta rather than a distinct tool. Project-reported changes include improved calibration quality and error detection, Linux logging support, and base-station management with a supported BLE adapter. No Steam Frame test or compatibility claim is established.

How the documented calibration workflows differ

Standard calibration

Space Calibrator’s Steam listing describes moving a controller and a tracker together in a figure-eight motion to calibrate their relationship. This is a one-time alignment workflow, as described by the listing; it is not evidence that Steam Frame itself can see base stations. The listed examples concern Quest and Pico, not Steam Frame.

Continuous calibration

The same listing describes attaching a tracker to the VR headset for continuous calibration. A SteamVR-compatible tracker is therefore a relevant accessory category to investigate, but neither the listing nor the Linux project confirms that a particular tracker model works with Steam Frame. The Linux project says extensive room-scale movement can cause drift with wireless headsets and Lighthouse trackers, and presents continuous calibration as a possible mitigation. That is the project’s guidance, not an independently measured result.

Linux setup

Stavdel’s repository presents its software as a Linux port of OpenVR Space Calibrator, with instructions requiring SteamVR and a separately launched companion application. It lists ALVR, SteamVR, Lighthouse, and mixed VR setups, but does not specifically list Steam Frame. The project warns that results vary by hardware. It directs Monado and WiVRn users toward MoToC; the available material does not establish MoToC as a Steam Frame solution.

How to choose without mistaking a port for a new alternative

  • On Windows: Space Calibrator is the documented reference option in the reviewed material. Its Steam listing specifies Windows 10/11 and describes both standard and continuous calibration.
  • On Linux: Stavdel’s port is the clearest documented variation, but it is a port of the same project, not a separate calibration approach. Check its setup requirements and hardware-dependent caveats before relying on it.
  • If you need continuous alignment: The documented workflow uses a tracker mounted to the headset. Verify the complete headset, tracker, runtime, and software configuration; no specific Steam Frame combination is confirmed here.
  • If you need proof of accuracy: The cited material supplies no controlled comparison or independent performance benchmark for these options. Valve’s general SteamVR Tracking specification gives a tracking-rate range of 250 Hz to 1 kHz, but that is not a Steam Frame or named tracker guarantee and says nothing about calibration utility accuracy. For public-facing terminology, Valve advises using “SteamVR Tracking”; “Lighthouse” is an informal nickname. Valve’s tracking branding guidance.

What is still unconfirmed

The available documentation does not show that the Linux port is a distinct alternative, that it works with Steam Frame, or that any named tracker model is compatible with Steam Frame. It also does not establish that an independent community tool has been tested successfully. A useful configuration report would need to identify the host operating system, runtime, tracker model, base stations, and calibration software version; without that detail, claims of compatibility are not reproducible.
