To identify a flower or plant in an existing iPhone photo, open it in Photos, tap the Info button, then tap the leaf icon if it appears. That icon launches Apple’s Visual Look Up results. It is a helpful visual-search starting point—not a guaranteed species identification.
Identify a plant in Photos with Visual Look Up
-
Open the flower or plant photo in the Photos app.
-
Tap the Info button (the “i” icon). If Visual Look Up is available for that image, the Info button shows a star indicator. For a plant or flower, look for the leaf icon.
-
Tap the leaf icon to view the result. Apple says Visual Look Up results come from Siri Knowledge and the web.
For the feature to work on iPhone, Apple lists iOS 15 or later as the minimum requirement. See Apple’s Visual Look Up instructions for the current steps and Apple’s feature availability page for regional availability.

What if the leaf icon does not appear?
The icon is not guaranteed to appear for every plant photo. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “If the Info button doesn’t have a star, Visual Look Up isn’t available yet for that photo.” The missing indicator means the feature cannot provide a result for that image at that time; it does not prove the subject is not a plant.
You can try another photo of the subject, preferably one in which the plant is clearly visible, then check the Info button again. If Visual Look Up remains unavailable, the feature has no result to show for that image.

How much should you trust the identification?
Visual Look Up provides a visual-search result based on Apple’s Siri Knowledge and web sources. Apple’s instructions do not publish an accuracy rate, confidence threshold, or guarantee that a result will identify a plant to species level.
If the exact identity matters, compare the result with a reliable regional botanical reference or consult a qualified local expert. Do not rely on an image result to decide whether a plant is safe to eat or touch, or to choose a treatment.

Visual Look Up is not the same as Visual Intelligence
Visual Look Up starts with a photo already in Photos. Apple lists it separately from Visual Intelligence: Plants and Animals, an Apple Intelligence capability. The latter has its own device, language, and region conditions; the iOS 15 requirement for Photos Visual Look Up does not establish eligibility for Visual Intelligence. Check Apple’s feature availability page for the applicable feature and region.
