If an Expo app signs in successfully but appears signed out after you reopen it, check how Supabase stores and restores its session. A login flag held only in React state disappears when the app process ends. Supabase needs a persistent storage adapter, persistSession: true, and startup UI that waits for Auth to restore the session.
Why am I signed out when I reopen my Expo app?
Successful sign-in and persistent sign-in are separate steps. The Supabase client must write the session to storage and load it again when the app starts. Expo’s current Supabase guide configures persistent storage and says its client keeps users signed in across launches: Expo: Using Supabase.
First confirm that sign-in returned a session. Then, on a fresh launch, check whether the client restores one and emits the corresponding Auth state. Supabase’s React Native quickstart demonstrates observing Auth changes and reading claims with getClaims: Supabase: React Native quickstart. Without your client initialization and logs, the symptom alone does not identify which step is failing.
How do I keep Supabase logged in after restarting the app?
Use one documented storage setup
For Expo’s current integration, install the SQLite localStorage shim before creating the Supabase client, then pass localStorage as the client’s storage option. The guide’s setup also enables persistSession: true and autoRefreshToken: true. Follow the installation and initialization shown in the Expo guide for your project.

Supabase’s React Native quickstart shows another documented pattern: native AsyncStorage, persistence enabled, and automatic token refresh. Use the setup that fits your project and package versions; do not create multiple Supabase clients with conflicting storage configuration. AsyncStorage is persistent but unencrypted, according to Expo’s AsyncStorage documentation.
Connect token refresh to app state
On iOS and Android, start automatic refresh when the app becomes active and stop it when the app moves to the background or becomes inactive. Both the Expo integration and Supabase quickstart show app-state-aware refresh. Register the AppState listener once, rather than every time a screen renders.

Let restored Auth state control navigation
Do not use a transient React state value as proof that the user is still signed in. Keep the app in a loading or restoration state while the client resolves its initial Auth state; then render or route according to the session. Supabase’s quickstart uses onAuthStateChange, and the Expo Router authentication guide demonstrates a provider that tracks both isLoading and session. This prevents a protected screen from briefly showing signed-out UI while storage is still being read.
Which session storage option should I choose?
| Option | What the documentation establishes | Best fit and caveat |
|---|---|---|
Expo SQLite-backed localStorage |
Expo’s current Supabase guide installs expo-sqlite/localStorage/install before client creation and passes localStorage as storage. The guide describes sessions persisting across launches. Source. |
Use the Expo-specific setup when its documented packages and configuration fit your app. |
| AsyncStorage | Supabase’s React Native quickstart presents AsyncStorage for native apps; Expo describes its AsyncStorage as persistent but unencrypted. Supabase source; Expo source. | Use the quickstart pattern when it matches your project. Persistence does not make the stored data encrypted. |
| SecureStore | Expo describes SecureStore as encrypted native key-value storage designed to persist across app restarts and updates. Android data is not preserved after uninstall; on iOS, Keychain data may remain after reinstall with the same bundle ID. Expo SecureStore documentation. | Consider it for small secrets when its security properties suit your needs, but verify compatibility with the Supabase storage adapter before treating it as a drop-in replacement. |
Storage choice is a security decision as well as a persistence decision: keeping a session after restart does not itself encrypt it. Never put a Supabase secret key in a client app; Expo warns that secret keys bypass row-level security in its Supabase guide.

What should I check if the session still does not return?
- Inspect client creation. Confirm the app imports and initializes one client with the intended storage adapter,
persistSession: true, andautoRefreshToken: true. - Inspect sign-in and startup separately. Log the sign-in result’s session, then observe the initial Auth state after a full app restart. Supabase’s React Native quickstart shows
onAuthStateChangeandgetClaims. - Check foreground refresh. Verify the app-state listener starts refresh on
active, stops it when inactive or backgrounded, and is not registered repeatedly. - Check startup routing. Keep protected routes behind a restoration/loading state until the Auth state is known; route from the restored session rather than an old in-memory flag.
- Investigate session termination. If the session was restored and later disappears, review sign-out calls, invalid refresh tokens, project session limits, and expiry settings. Supabase documents session expiry and termination controls in its User sessions reference.
Could token expiry or email confirmation explain it?
Persistence cannot prevent a session from ending under Supabase’s session rules. Supabase says access tokens typically last 5 minutes to 1 hour and recommends the default one-hour JWT expiry for most applications. Its session documentation also covers inactivity and maximum-lifetime settings, single-session controls, and security actions that can terminate sessions.
A different case is a user who never received a session after signing up. Expo notes that new Supabase projects confirm email addresses by default; depending on that flow, signUp can return a user with session: null until confirmation. That is not the same as losing an established session on a later app launch. See Expo’s Supabase guide.
