Build the champion who solves your next progression problem—not automatically the one with the gold frame. Legendaries often have strong base stats and standout abilities, but Plarium says they are not always superior to less-rare champions. A well-suited Epic can be the better first investment when its skills fit your immediate goal and your account can develop it.

How to choose which champion to build first

Start by naming the content you want to progress in next: campaign, a particular dungeon, Clan Boss, Arena, or another mode. Then compare the Epic and Legendary you already own by the job each can do for that target. Plarium’s champion guide describes Legendaries as having the highest base stats and notable abilities, while cautioning that rarity alone does not establish superiority.

1. Identify the bottleneck

Be specific about what is holding your team back. You might need more damage, survivability, or another capability relevant to the encounter. Compare each candidate’s actual skills with that need rather than asking which rarity is higher. A champion that fills a missing role can be more useful to your current team than one whose abilities duplicate what you already have. That fit is a roster-based judgment, not a universal Epic-versus-Legendary ranking.

2. Check whether the skills work for your goal

Read the full skill descriptions, including effects and cooldowns, and consider whether skill upgrades are important to the champion’s contribution. Plarium’s Tavern guide explains that skill upgrades can improve damage, chances, and cooldowns. It does not establish that one rarity’s skills are always more valuable, so judge the particular champion and the content you want to clear.

3. Compare the complete investment

Your choice is not just a champion-leveling decision. Rank-up uses same-rank champions or Chickens, and the champion returns to Level 1 after ranking up. Ascension, leveling, gear, and skill tomes also affect how soon a champion can contribute. Plarium describes skill tomes as hard to come by and advises against spending them on champions you do not intend to invest in. Check the champion’s tome requirements before committing scarce books.

4. Account for your existing roster

A champion’s value depends partly on who is already on your team. If your strongest candidate brings a role or effect you already have covered, the other candidate may improve the team more—even if it is lower rarity. This is a practical roster-fit comparison, not a claim that Epics generally outperform Legendaries.

When an Epic is the better first build

Prioritize the Epic when it addresses your immediate content bottleneck, contributes something your roster needs, and is practical to develop with the resources you have. Its lower rarity does not make it a poor investment: Plarium expressly warns that Legendaries are not always better than less-rare champions. The decisive question is whether this Epic advances your next goal more effectively than the Legendary you are considering.

When to build the Legendary first

Choose the Legendary first when its particular skills address the same bottleneck better, fit your team, and you can afford its development. Legendary is a useful signal of a champion’s potential, not a guarantee that it is the right first project for every account. Do not promote one solely because its frame is gold.

Why rarity, shards, and gear can be misleading

Rarity describes acquisition odds, not usefulness

Plarium’s champion page lists these shard probabilities. The page does not show a publication year, and rates can change; check the in-game Summon screen for current odds.

Shard Epic chance Legendary chance
Ancient 8.0% 0.5%
Void 8.0% 0.5%
Sacred 94% 6%

These are Plarium’s listed game probabilities; they explain how often those rarities may be summoned, not how useful a champion will be in battle. The same page notes that Void shards unlock only Void-affinity champions.

Gear quality also affects performance

Champion rarity alone cannot tell you which build will perform better. Plarium’s Gear Overview explains that gear rarity determines how many substats an item starts with, while gear rank affects stat values. Compare the actual gear you can equip on each candidate, not just their rarity labels.

Rank-up planning: levels and requirements

In Plarium’s Tavern guide, champion level caps rise with rank. Rank-up consumes same-rank fodder or Chickens, and the champion returns to Level 1 afterward.

These rank caps are listed in Plarium’s Tavern guide, which does not show a publication year. Before ranking up either candidate, consider whether you can supply the fodder and then level the champion again.

A quick decision checklist

  • Name the next mode or encounter you want to improve in.
  • Identify the job your team is missing there.
  • Compare both champions’ actual skills and how they fit your roster.
  • Check what skill upgrades each needs and whether you can spare the relevant tomes.
  • Account for rank-up fodder, post-rank-up leveling, ascension, and available gear.
  • Build the candidate that gives you the more practical route to that goal—not the one with the higher rarity by default.

What this comparison cannot decide for you

There is no universal answer based on rarity alone, and the available official guidance does not establish a current ranking of named Epic and Legendary champions. Which one you should build depends on your roster, target mode, available resources, and the champions’ current skills. For an individual choice, compare the specific champions against current mode-focused guidance and game updates. Plarium’s beginner tips offer general progression advice, but do not replace that account-specific comparison.
