The harder work is deciding what each listing is, what it is about, which language it uses, whether a reader can access it, and whether the information is still true when someone clicks it.
That is the practical lesson from Austin Reynolds’s account of trying to index Telegram communities: a useful catalogue needs careful classification and a recurring verification process, not just an ingestion pipeline.
Why a list of Telegram links is not yet a useful directory
Reynolds describes the information an indexer may have to work with as a community title, description, invite target, and approximate member count. Those details can help, but they do not reliably settle basic questions such as the community’s topic or language. In his account, an indexer has to infer those labels from limited, potentially noisy information rather than assume they arrive as dependable metadata. Read Reynolds’s account on DEV.
That uncertainty matters to readers. A title may sound English-language or match a topic, yet the conversations may not. A busy community can still be a poor match for someone who cannot read its language. Language is therefore a useful discovery filter, but an index should make clear when a language label is inferred rather than confirmed.

Reynolds points to VIEW as an example of a catalogue, not as a claim that it is complete or independently verified. His account also cautions that the example directory is broad rather than exhaustive and may include adult content.
Keep channels, groups, and bots distinct
Telegram’s documentation describes channels as broadcasting tools and groups as chat structures. Channels let administrators publish to an audience; groups are built for conversation. Bots are tools, not another name for either kind of community. These differences affect what a listing promises and what a user will find after joining. The 200,000-member figure is Telegram’s documented supergroup capacity, not a typical group size or a measure of activity. Basic groups also differ from supergroups: Telegram documents that basic groups must be migrated to supergroups before they can be assigned a public username.
What “public” does—and does not—mean
Telegram distinguishes public usernames from private invite links. Under its documented API rules, channels and supergroups can have public usernames; private communities may instead use invite links. A listing that has a public-facing name is not proof that every related detail is publicly retrievable or that every visitor can access the community. Telegram’s API documentation explains these distinctions.

Participant data is a particularly important boundary. The channels.getParticipants method documentation lists errors for private channels and cases where administrator rights are required. It is not an unrestricted endpoint for enumerating the members of public communities. An index should not imply that it can inspect membership simply because a community is discoverable.
Search helps discovery, but does not make a catalogue exhaustive
Telegram’s API includes channels.searchPosts, for global searches of public-channel posts, and channels.getChannelRecommendations, for recommendations of similar public channels. These methods can help people discover content and communities, but their existence does not establish that search results cover every relevant public community. Telegram’s search method documentation notes that global searches have free-use limits and that Telegram Stars may be required after free searches are exhausted. This is a detail of current documentation, not a permanent guarantee.

A directory adds editorial decisions that search alone does not answer: which entities to include, how to categorize them, whether a topic tag is trustworthy, how to identify language, and how to show freshness and access status. Reynolds’s proposed catalogue approach includes curated categories, tags, language filters, descriptions, type separation, and activity snapshots. Each can make discovery more useful, provided uncertainty is visible instead of hidden behind confident labels.
Design listings around the questions a reader needs answered
A practical community entry should help someone decide whether to click, join, or keep looking. The following fields make the directory’s assumptions legible:

- Entity type: Identify it as a broadcast channel, discussion group, or bot/tool.
- Language: State whether the label is declared or inferred; avoid presenting a guess as confirmed fact.
- Topic and tags: Use classifications grounded in the available title, description, or posts, and acknowledge that these signals can be noisy.
- Activity and freshness: Show when the listing was last checked and what the activity snapshot represents.
- Access state: Distinguish a public username from an invite link or an inaccessible/private state; do not suggest participant information is openly available.
Build a re-verification loop, not just an ingestion pipeline
Communities can go quiet, change names, or turn private. A listing that was accurate at collection time can therefore mislead later. Reynolds’s central operational lesson is that the directory needs a recurring verification process: revisit entries, check that the target still resolves, review whether its description and classifications remain apt, and update the recorded freshness and access state. As he puts it, “The least glamorous part of the problem and probably the most important: you need a re-verification loop, not just an ingestion pipeline.”
This makes freshness part of the product rather than a behind-the-scenes cleanup task. A directory that shows when a listing was checked gives readers a way to judge its reliability; one that silently retains stale links and labels makes its uncertainty invisible.
What this indexing attempt does not establish
Reynolds’s account is a report of his own attempt, not a quantified survey of Telegram or an independent replication of the indexing work. Telegram’s reviewed API documentation establishes specific entity, search, and access rules, but it does not quantify how much metadata a third-party indexer can collect across all public communities. Treat any claim about completeness or universal metadata availability with caution.
