The available game-specific guidance is for the PS2 version in PCSX2 and the PS3 version in RPCS3; their settings and reported problems are different, so do not apply one emulator’s fix to the other.
This guide focuses on those emulators. It does not establish that a native Windows or Steam version is available.
Identify your emulator and the point of failure
Before changing settings, note the console edition and region or revision, emulator build, operating system, controller model and connection type, and graphics backend. Record exactly when the problem occurs—for example, after the intro, while opening settings, after pressing Start, or only when a controller is plugged in. If it began after an emulator setting or driver update, include that detail in your diagnosis.

Fix a PCSX2 black screen after the intro
Try the game-specific setting cautiously
A PCSX2 wiki search result names the “Delay VIF1 stalls” gamefix for a black screen after the intro when starting a new game. The wiki page could not be opened for current verification, so the exact steps and compatibility with current PCSX2 builds or game revisions are uncertain. Treat this as a troubleshooting lead, not a confirmed fix for every black screen.

- In PCSX2, locate the game-specific setting named Delay VIF1 stalls.
- Change only that setting, then retry the same point in the game.
- If the screen remains black or the change causes another problem, restore the setting to its previous value.
Do not change unrelated graphics or emulation settings at the same time; doing so makes it harder to tell whether this lead helped.
Check whether the fault is game-specific and preserve logs
If the setting does not help, compare the result with a known-good game in the same PCSX2 setup. If other games work, that is useful evidence that the failure may be specific to this title or revision; if they fail too, investigate the emulator or system setup.

For a reproducible problem, follow the PCSX2 issue-reporting guide: enable file logging, reproduce the issue, and preserve emulog.txt. Avoid restarting PCSX2 after reproducing the failure, because useful log information may be lost. If the problem is a visible graphics fault rather than a black screen, the guide also explains how to save a GS dump.
Fix controller detection or incorrect buttons in PCSX2
Check the port, input source, and mapping
Open PCSX2’s controller settings and confirm that the player-one device is assigned to Controller Port 1. PCSX2 documents SDL as the normal starting point. For devices whose button layout is reported incorrectly, try SDL Raw Input and manually clear or remap controls; automatic mapping may be wrong for such devices.

If an XInput-compliant controller does not work through SDL, try XInput as a backup. Use DInput only as a last resort for devices that do not work with SDL or XInput; PCSX2 describes it as less reliable.
Rule out keyboard and hotkey conflicts
If controller presses trigger emulator hotkeys, pause menus, or unrelated desktop actions, exit Steam completely for a test, or disable or change Steam controller support and retry. PCSX2 documents a conflict path in which Steam Input keyboard mappings interact with emulator hotkeys.

Investigate a crash that happens only with one controller attached
If PCSX2 crashes only when a particular third-party controller or adapter is connected, check whether its driver uses EZFRD64.dll under C:WindowsUSB_Vibration. PCSX2 documents this driver as a possible cause and recommends removing or uninstalling the buggy driver.
Do not delete driver files merely because a controller is attached. Confirm that the named driver is present and understand that removing it may stop the device from working. If your existing controller is faulty or cannot be made to work after the checks above, a standard Windows XInput gamepad is another option; no particular model has been verified for this game.

Diagnose PCSX2 crashes on Windows
Use the timing of the crash to narrow the cause. PCSX2 documents the following Windows-specific possibilities; each is a lead for the matching symptom, not proof of what caused a particular crash.
- Crash while opening settings or an error at launch: outdated GPU drivers may be responsible. Update drivers for all GPUs in the system, including an integrated laptop GPU.
- Crash while adding a game directory or opening settings: Windows shell or interface-modification software can interfere. PCSX2 names OldNewExplorer as an example.
- Crash involving Vulkan applications: PCSX2 says the OpenCL, OpenGL, and Vulkan Compatibility Pack can cause PCSX2 and other Vulkan applications to crash. If that pack is installed, PCSX2 advises uninstalling it and rebooting.
Change only what matches the symptom and keep a note of what you changed. These documented causes do not justify reinstalling Windows or updating unrelated components without evidence.
Handle an RPCS3 reconnect prompt or crash at 1080p
A single RPCS3 issue report, opened December 28, 2022, describes The Simpsons Game accepting Start once and then asking the player to reconnect the controller. The reporter says disconnecting and reconnecting resolved that prompt. The same report says the game crashed at a 1080p default resolution but worked at 720p.
If you see those same symptoms, try disconnecting and reconnecting the controller, then test 720p if the game crashes after continuing at 1080p. These are diagnostic experiments reported for one user’s configuration, not confirmed fixes or a general RPCS3 setup procedure. Keep the emulator, game revision, controller, and graphics settings unchanged while testing each change so you can identify which experiment affects the result.
