Its large screen, Flash support and browser-focused features had appeal; weak interface polish, uneven video performance, short battery life and the lack of installable apps undercut the idea. This is a historical review based on coverage from 2009–2010, not an assessment of the device’s present-day availability or usability.
What was the JooJoo?
Fusion Garage designed the JooJoo around browsing the web on a large touchscreen rather than around a broad catalog of installable apps. Contemporary reports described a Linux-based interface, Wi-Fi connectivity and a browser-led experience. WIRED reported that it was Wi-Fi-only and did not support installing programs, a consequential limitation for a tablet intended to do more than display websites. WIRED’s April 2010 review rated it 3/10; that score represents WIRED’s editorial judgment, not a universal product rating.
JooJoo specifications reported at launch
Launch-era coverage generally describes a 12-inch-class touchscreen and modest netbook-era internals. Specifications varied slightly between sources and stages of coverage, so the figures below should be read as reported, not as a guarantee about every unit.
| Item | Reported detail | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Display | 12.1 inches; 1366 × 768 touchscreen | IT Pro, June 2010. PCWorld described a pre-production unit as 12 inches at the same resolution. |
| Processor | Intel Atom N270 at 1.6GHz | TechRadar and IT Pro, 2010. |
| Memory | 1GB | TechRadar and IT Pro, 2010; PCWorld also reported 1GB for its pre-production unit. |
| Storage | 4GB SSD | TechRadar and IT Pro, 2010; PCWorld reported 4GB SSD for its pre-production unit. |
| Graphics | Nvidia Ion | IT Pro, June 2010. |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi 802.11b/g; Wi-Fi-only internet connectivity | IT Pro lists 802.11b/g; WIRED describes Wi-Fi-only connectivity. |
| Operating system | Linux-based interface | TechRadar and IT Pro, 2010; WIRED also identifies it as Linux-based. |
| Weight | 1.1kg | IT Pro’s 2010 specifications. |
Early preview coverage did not always describe the display size the same way: PCWorld called its pre-production screen 12 inches, while later reviews commonly listed 12.1 inches. That small discrepancy is a reason to treat the specifications as contemporary reporting rather than a single definitive configuration sheet. PCWorld’s December 2009 pre-production report also relayed Fusion Garage’s five-hour uninterrupted-use battery claim; it was a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified result.

What reviewers liked
Flash and web-first features
The clearest attraction was the attempt to make a full-size browser experience central to the device. TechRadar praised Flash support, which mattered in 2010 when many websites relied on Flash media. Its review also highlighted a page viewer and a movable on-screen keyboard as useful touches. WIRED likewise counted Flash support among the hardware’s strengths. Those features helped distinguish the JooJoo from the more app-centered tablet approach, even though they did not resolve the broader performance and usability problems.
A large screen in sleek hardware
WIRED described the hardware as sleek, and the approximately 12-inch touchscreen offered more room for web pages than smaller mobile screens. The trade-off was portability: WIRED criticized the tablet’s weight, and IT Pro listed it at 1.1kg. This was a device better suited to being carried deliberately than to disappearing into a bag like a lighter tablet.

What did not work well
Sluggish and inconsistent browsing
Responsiveness was a recurring concern. TechRadar’s July 2010 review described sluggish browsing and inconsistent startup, while its April hands-on reported sluggish software, crashes and poor HD video handling on the preview unit. The April article noted that firmware fixes were anticipated at the time; an expectation in a preview is not evidence that updates were delivered or remain obtainable. TechRadar’s July 2010 review also found that high-resolution Flash video could perform poorly.
Video and media limitations
Flash compatibility was a selling point, but it did not guarantee smooth playback. TechRadar reported poor performance with high-resolution Flash video, and the earlier hands-on found HD video handling weak. The practical distinction is important: a browser may support a media format while the processor, software and overall implementation still struggle to play demanding video well.

Battery life varied by test
Battery reports were mixed and should not be collapsed into a single dependable runtime. TechRadar reported between three and five hours in its July 2010 review. WIRED observed around five hours in its own use. IT Pro reported four hours of idle operation at the home screen while connected to Wi-Fi before shutdown—a reviewer-specific idle observation, not a standardized active-use benchmark. Fusion Garage’s separate five-hour uninterrupted-use figure, as reported by PCWorld in 2009, was the company’s claim rather than a test result.
Interface polish and app support
Reviewers found the interface insufficiently polished, with TechRadar criticizing the feel and design as well as startup and browsing behavior. IT Pro concluded that the JooJoo was too awkward and under-polished to mount a serious challenge to the iPad. The lack of installable programs also constrained what users could do beyond the browser, while contemporary comparisons generally favored the iPad’s polish and broader app support. These were launch-era comparisons, not current tablet recommendations. IT Pro’s June 2010 review covers its specifications, usability concerns and battery observation.

Is the JooJoo tablet any good?
As a 2010 experiment in browser-first tablet design, the JooJoo had a coherent idea and a few distinctive features, but contemporary reviewers judged the execution poorly. Flash support and its spacious screen could not compensate for uneven responsiveness, limited video performance, weak battery reports, awkward usability and no installable apps. For a historical technology review, it is an interesting attempt to make the web the main interface; by the standards and expectations reflected in launch-era reviews, it was not a convincing all-purpose tablet.
What current buyers should know
The cited reviews establish what journalists encountered around launch, not whether a JooJoo can be bought reliably today, whether firmware or manufacturer support remains available, how secure its software is on the modern web, or whether repairs are practical. Those present-day questions are unresolved by the historical coverage. Anyone considering a second-hand unit should treat its condition, software state, seller claims and ability to function as unverified until checked directly.
