Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Build a FIX-connected terminal around three separate responsibilities: a session adapter that speaks the broker’s FIX dialect, a Rust core that applies venue reports to one canonical order model, and a UI that displays that model without treating a request as a confirmed result. Keep each report as an event as well as updating the order’s current state. That distinction is essential when fills arrive during a pending cancel or replace.
How should a FIX terminal be structured?
Keep protocol handling, order lifecycle, and presentation separate. The FIX adapter manages the session and translates incoming messages into validated application events. The Rust core applies those events in a controlled order and owns the current order state. The UI subscribes to state changes; it should not independently infer that an order was accepted, canceled, replaced, or filled.
- FIX session adapter: Handle encoding and parsing, session sequencing, heartbeats, reconnect behavior, and the counterparty’s message profile. Map venue-specific fields and identifiers at this boundary rather than spreading FIX-specific assumptions through the UI.
- Canonical order model: Track each order and its identifier chain, submitted terms, executions, remaining quantity, and any pending request. Apply execution reports and other validated venue messages as events.
- State publication and display: Publish a consistent snapshot or ordered stream of changes to the book and order panel. Preserve enough event history to explain how the displayed state arose and to diagnose a reconnect or apparent inconsistency.
A local matching engine is a different component from a FIX-connected terminal. A terminal consumes venue order and market-data messages; a matching engine implements matching rules for orders submitted to that engine. A repository that demonstrates an order book can inform data-structure design, but it does not establish that the same engine is a certified or production-ready venue connection.
How do FIX messages describe an order’s state?
Do not reduce an order to one status badge. In FIX, ExecType describes the event being reported, while OrdStatus describes the order’s current status. An execution report can therefore communicate a particular event while also reporting the order’s resulting status. The FIX Trading Community’s “Order State Changes” guidance lays out scenarios and matrices; its exchange- and marketplace-specific cases supplement, and in some cases supersede, the general cases for those environments.

For an implementation, retain both the incoming event and the resulting state. A mutable field such as status = Working cannot, by itself, explain whether the order was acknowledged, partially filled, amended, or subject to a pending request. Preserve the raw message or a suitably complete normalized record with its session and sequence context so that the event history can be reconciled with what the user saw.
Keep pending requests distinct from confirmed outcomes
A cancel request is not a cancellation, and a replace request is not a confirmed amendment. Represent a user’s request as pending until a venue report confirms its outcome. While it is pending, continue to apply new venue events rather than freezing the order display.
The FIX Protocol, Limited document “FIX Latest as of EP284 – Order State Changes,” dated July 2020, illustrates why: Pending Replace can take precedence over Partially Filled as the displayed OrdStatus, even though a trade can occur during the pending interval. Keep the fill as a separate event and update cumulative and remaining quantities from the reports. Do not hide the execution merely because a replace is pending.

Respect terminal states
The cited FIX order-state guidance treats Filled and Canceled as terminal in its documented scenarios. Do not casually turn either into a working order in the UI. If later messages appear to conflict with a terminal report, preserve their order and session context and check the counterparty’s rules and message profile; do not silently rewrite the event history to make the sequence look ordinary.
What should the Rust order model contain?
Normalize orders behind the FIX adapter so that protocol-specific details do not become the UI’s source of truth. A useful model separates order identity, requested terms, execution totals, current venue-reported status, and any operation awaiting confirmation.
- Identifiers: Client order identifier, venue order identifier when supplied, and the original identifier needed to relate cancel or replace requests to the relevant order. Preserve the chain when an amendment creates a new identifier.
- Order terms: Instrument, side, order type, limit price when applicable, and total order quantity.
- Execution data: Cumulative executed quantity, remaining quantity, and average or last execution details when available. Keep individual fills or equivalent event records so aggregate fields can be checked against the history.
- Lifecycle: Latest venue-reported
OrdStatus, the event described by the latestExecType, and any pending cancel or replace request. Do not make a local button press stand in for a venue report. - Diagnostics: Session and sequence context, timestamps available from the message, and enough raw or normalized message data to investigate replay and recovery issues.
Apply validated events serially or through another design that guarantees a deterministic order for each order. Derive the displayed remaining quantity from the applicable order and execution data, and validate it against reports rather than assuming every message is a complete snapshot. On reconnect, use the counterparty’s supported recovery and reconciliation procedure; a locally saved view alone cannot establish the venue’s current state.

How should the order book and scalping panel work?
Make the book and order panel projections of the same state model, not separate stores that can disagree. The panel should make it easy to distinguish market information, the user’s own orders, and venue-confirmed lifecycle events. A book can be stale or disconnected even while a local order record remains visible, so show connection health and data freshness in the interface.
Show the fields needed to understand each order
- Side and instrument
- Price and total quantity
- Cumulative executed quantity and remaining quantity
- Current venue-reported status
- Latest pending operation, such as “cancel requested” or “replace requested”
- Connection or market-data condition that affects whether the displayed view is current
Use separate visual treatment for a request awaiting confirmation and a confirmed result. If an order is partially filled while a cancel or replace is pending, keep the fill and pending operation visible together. Avoid labels such as “canceled” until the venue confirms cancellation.

Separate market depth from order lifecycle
Market depth and an order’s execution reports answer different questions. The book presents market-data levels; execution reports communicate events and status for orders. A terminal may combine them on one screen, but should not infer that a displayed resting quantity is the user’s order or that a change in the book confirms a fill or cancellation. The exact market-data message profile and venue behavior depend on the counterparty and must be checked against its specification.

Which Rust implementation path fits?
Choose by scope and counterparty fit, not by a blanket claim that one library is the best Rust FIX solution. The documentation reviewed for these projects describes different categories of software; feature descriptions are not independent validation of production suitability.
| Option | Documented scope | Useful when | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
FerrumFIX (fefix) |
Reusable FIX-compliant data components; its documentation says it is not a FIX engine. | You need protocol components to build or integrate with your own session and application architecture. | That parsing and encoding alone provide session sequencing, recovery, broker-specific compatibility, or a complete production stack. |
alpaca-fix |
Alpaca-oriented Rust client documentation lists FIX 4.2 and 4.4, session management, heartbeats and sequence numbers, order routing, execution reports, market-data requests, and session recovery. | Your intended counterparty is Alpaca and its currently supported protocol profile and requirements match the client. | That it is universally broker-compatible. The cited documentation identifies version 0.3.1; verify the current crate, counterparty support, identifiers, and certification requirements before adoption. |
Trading-Engine repository |
A self-described Rust matching engine with price-time priority, partial fills, cancel and replace, book updates, deterministic events, and snapshot/command-log recovery. | You want to study matching-engine structures or lifecycle concepts in a standalone example. | That it is a FIX session client, exchange-certified, production-used, or has a demonstrated throughput or latency guarantee. |
| Barter documentation | Documents an OrderManager for exchange order lifecycles and broader state including connectivity, instruments, positions, and trading enablement. |
You want a reference for organizing order lifecycle and engine-wide state. | That its feature descriptions independently establish operational quality or fit for your venue. |
The references describe fefix documentation version 0.7.0 and Barter documentation version 0.14.0. Treat those as the versions identified by the cited documentation, not as a guarantee of the latest available releases. Before choosing any dependency, review its current documentation, source, license, maintenance, and security posture.
What must be checked with the broker or venue?
FIX is a protocol family, not a promise that every counterparty supports the same version, fields, or order-state behavior. Before connecting a terminal, obtain the target counterparty’s current specification and confirm the details that affect both session handling and order semantics.

- New-order, cancel, cancel-replace, execution-report, and market-data behavior
- Venue-specific scenarios for partial fills, pending requests, rejections, and terminal states
- Certification or conformance steps required by the counterparty
- How to reconcile local state after a dropped connection or a gap in received messages
The FIX Trading Community’s order-state scenarios provide a standards reference, but exchange-specific cases matter for an exchange or centralized marketplace. Library documentation and repository descriptions can help assess implementation scope; they cannot replace the target counterparty’s specification or establish that an integration has passed its operational requirements.
How should the design be tested?
Test state transitions and recovery behavior, not just whether a message can be parsed or a button can be clicked. Build deterministic scenarios from the counterparty’s rules, including sequences in which messages arrive while an operation is pending.
- New order accepted, rejected, or otherwise reported by the venue
- One or more partial fills followed by a terminal report
- Cancel requested, then a fill arrives before the cancel outcome
- Replace requested, then a fill arrives while the replace is pending
- Cancel or replace rejected, with the order’s resulting state still shown accurately
- Disconnect, reconnect, and recovery or reconciliation using the supported session procedure
- Duplicate, delayed, or apparently contradictory messages handled without silently discarding history
Check that the order panel and book update from the same applied state, that pending requests remain visibly pending until confirmed, and that event history explains each state change. These checks address correctness and observability; they do not imply a trading-performance advantage.
