Your agent’s JSON file can fail in two different ways: it may not be valid JSON at all, or it may be valid JSON that the particular agent does not accept. Check syntax first, then check the file against that agent’s documented configuration format and version. Because no agent is named here, there is no universal set of keys, paths, or limits to apply.
When the file is not valid JSON
JSON has a defined grammar for its punctuation, strings, values, and delimiters. A missing comma, an extra comma, an unquoted property name, a malformed string escape, or an invalid literal can make a document fail to parse. These are examples of syntax errors, not a ranked list of common agent failures.
Use a JSON parser or validator to identify syntax problems. RFC 8259 says parsers must accept texts that conform to the JSON grammar, but they may also accept extensions. As a result, a file that one permissive tool accepts may not work with a stricter parser elsewhere. For interoperability, keep the file within standard JSON syntax. RFC 8259
When valid JSON has the wrong shape or values
A successful parse only proves that the text represents a JSON value. It does not prove the agent supports its fields, nesting, or value types. A file can be syntactically valid yet fail application-specific validation or loading.

Check the target agent’s current documentation for its required root value, supported keys, expected types, and nesting. These rules can differ between agents and versions; there is no general agent configuration schema that can be inferred from JSON itself.
When duplicate keys cause unpredictable results
RFC 8259 recommends that names within a JSON object be unique. If an object repeats a key, receiver behavior is unpredictable: an implementation may keep the last value, reject the object, or expose multiple values. A file that seems to work in one parser can therefore behave differently in another. Remove duplicate keys rather than relying on a parser’s handling. RFC 8259, section 4

Object member order can also be treated differently by implementations. Do not rely on key order unless the agent’s documentation explicitly requires it.
When size, nesting, encoding, or version gets in the way
A parser may impose limits on input size or nesting depth, so valid JSON is not necessarily accepted at every scale. If a file parses but the agent still rejects it, check for unusually large or deeply nested content and look for limits in the agent’s documentation. There is no universal threshold established for agent JSON files.

Also confirm the file uses the encoding and format expected by the target agent. RFC 8259 requires UTF-8 for JSON exchanged between systems that are not part of a closed ecosystem. The agent’s own documentation remains the authority for its supported versions and configuration requirements. RFC 8259
A safe order for troubleshooting
- Validate syntax. Run the file through a JSON parser or validator and fix the errors it reports.
- Check the agent’s contract. Compare the root value, keys, nesting, and value types with documentation for the exact agent and version.
- Make objects unambiguous. Remove duplicate keys and avoid depending on the order of object members.
- Investigate limits and compatibility. If the JSON is valid and matches the documented format, check target-specific size and nesting limits, encoding expectations, and version-specific requirements.
- Parse safely. Do not execute file contents with
evalor a similar mechanism to parse them. RFC 8259 warns that this creates an unacceptable security risk; use a JSON parser instead. RFC 8259
Why agent tools may involve JSON without sharing a config format
Agent workflows can use JSON for structured tool results, but that does not mean every agent stores configuration in JSON or accepts the same configuration fields. For example, the Model Context Protocol’s server-tools specification dated 2026-07-28 describes structured tool results and recommends that a tool returning structured content also return serialized JSON in a text-content block for backwards compatibility.
