It can also mean treating a group of related files as one unit and waiting until the whole group is ready. In any specific system, “batch” may refer to unattended execution, a grouped set of files, or both.
What does batch file transfer mean?
The term has two closely related uses:
- Batch as an execution method: A script, scheduler, command file, or managed file transfer (MFT) workflow runs transfer instructions without requiring an operator to initiate each action interactively.
- Batch as a group of files: Several files are collected or held together and transferred as one logical set, often after a signal indicates that the set is complete.
For example, a scheduled script that uploads a report every night is a batch transfer in the first sense. A system that waits for a “done” marker before moving all files for a daily report is using the second sense too.
MFT is a category of software for facilitating and managing transfers. It can provide centralized configuration and operational controls for scheduled or event-triggered jobs. A scripted command-line transfer is not automatically an MFT deployment; those are different implementation levels. Oklahoma’s Batch File Transfer Standard, effective May 24, 2022 and last reviewed September 22, 2025, describes requirements and tools for its state-agency context.
How does a batch transfer work?
A typical unattended job prepares or identifies files, authenticates to a remote system, runs upload or download commands, records the result, and alerts an operator or downstream process if something fails. A corrected job can then be retried. In a simple SFTP setup, the commands may be saved in a plain-text file and executed in sequence.

Automating SFTP with a command file
SFTPPlus documents a client-shell workflow in which commands are placed in a text file and run using the client. SSH Communications Security also documents SFTP in batch mode for unattended transfers, including a z/OS example. The exact syntax depends on the client and version; consult the documentation for the software actually installed. Batch execution does not remove the need for non-interactive authentication, such as a configured public key, or for verifying the server’s identity.
Using a marker to indicate that files are ready
Another design is to wait for a marker file—sometimes called a “done” file—before transferring a group. This can help prevent a receiver from processing a set while files are still arriving. Marker meaning is implementation-specific: the sending and receiving systems need to agree on the marker’s path or pattern, what files belong to the batch, and whether subdirectories are included.

For example, SFTPPlus documentation for version 5.26.4 describes a configuration that waits for a marker path or pattern. Under the documented recursive-source rules, files in the marker’s directory and its subdirectories are included, and transfer begins 15 seconds after marker detection. Those details apply to that product and version, not to marker-based transfers generally. See SFTPPlus Transfers configuration.
How is batch transfer different from interactive transfer?

These approaches can overlap: an MFT platform may run unattended jobs, while a script may handle a single transfer without an MFT platform.

What security does a batch file transfer need?
Automation and encryption are separate concerns. A job can run unattended while still using an unsuitable transport protocol, and the word “FTP” in a product description does not establish what protection is enabled. The Oklahoma standard distinguishes FTP, whose data it describes as unencrypted in transit, from SFTP and SCP, which it describes as encrypted in transit. Confirm the actual protocol and configuration used by both endpoints; do not treat an unspecified “secure FTP” setup as secure by default.
Protect credentials used by unattended jobs and validate the remote server’s identity. SSH Communications Security’s unattended transfer guidance describes batch-mode SFTP using previously configured server host identity and a non-interactive authentication method such as public-key authentication.

A transfer that finishes without a person watching it needs enough visibility and recovery support to make failures manageable. Oklahoma’s state-agency standard calls for these controls:

- Retry functionality and failure notifications.
- An operator’s ability to retry after correcting the cause.
- Logs for anomalies, errors, and failures.
- Central documentation and a process for promoting configuration across environments.
For a recurring job, also make clear who receives alerts and what downstream process should do when files are missing or incomplete. Oklahoma names MuleSoft and MOVEit as tools supported by its architecture; that is a state-specific tool choice, not a general recommendation for every organization.
When should you use batch file transfer?
Batch transfer is useful when files move on a predictable schedule, arrive as a set, or need to move without an operator launching each transfer. A simple script and scheduler may suit a limited workflow. Centralized MFT controls may be useful when multiple jobs or teams need common configuration, monitoring, retries, and notifications. The right choice depends on the number and criticality of transfers, partner requirements, and the operational controls the organization needs.
Before automating a transfer, agree with the other endpoint on the protocol, authentication, file naming and destination rules, how readiness is determined, what counts as success, and how failures are reported and retried. These decisions prevent a transfer from being technically complete but unusable to the receiving system.
