The liquids form separate layers, and metal ions move through the salt during operation. The technology is being developed for grid-scale electricity storage, not as a consumer battery.
How a liquid metal battery is built
In the layered design described by MIT, the cell contains three liquid layers: a lower-density liquid metal on top, molten salt in the middle, and a denser liquid metal at the bottom. The metals act as the electrodes; the molten salt acts as the electrolyte. Because the liquids have different densities and do not readily mix, they remain separated into layers.
This is different from a conventional lithium-ion cell, which uses solid electrodes. The liquid layers are central to the battery’s architecture.
How it stores and releases electricity
Discharging
When the battery discharges, metal atoms at the upper, negative electrode release electrons and become positively charged ions. The ions pass through the molten salt to the lower electrode. The electrons travel through an external circuit, where they can power a connected load.

Charging
Charging reverses those reactions: electrical energy drives the ions and electrons back toward their original arrangement.
Where the design came from
MIT researchers Donald Sadoway and David Bradwell developed the technology with collaborators. Their first prototype used magnesium for the upper electrode, antimony for the lower electrode, and a salt mixture containing magnesium chloride as the electrolyte. MIT reported that the materials separated into layers and that the prototype behaved as predicted.

The early prototype chemistry should not be taken as the formula for a currently marketed system. MIT describes material selection as a design choice shaped by factors including cost, availability, operating temperature, and cell voltage. In 2010, Sadoway, Bradwell, and Luis Ortiz founded Liquid Metal Battery Corporation, later known as Ambri, to develop and scale the technology.
Sadoway described the inspiration as asking, “Could we run the smelter in reverse so it gives back its electricity?” (MIT Energy Initiative).

Why use it for grid storage?
The stated purpose is large-scale electricity storage: a grid operator could store energy, including generation from wind or solar, and discharge it when needed. MIT’s department profile said Ambri began testing its system at Microsoft in 2022 and described a planned utility deployment. Those are historical project statements; they do not establish whether either project is operating now or whether the system is currently available to buy.
Liquid metal batteries are industrial energy-storage systems, not consumer batteries for phones, laptops, or household devices. The available sources do not provide a current, like-for-like comparison with other grid-storage technologies, so suitability depends on the specific application and its requirements.

What performance has MIT reported?
In a 2022 account, MIT reported a lifespan of more than 20 years, retention of 99 percent of capacity over 5,000 charging cycles, and no combustible materials in the system (MIT News, 2022). These are figures reported by MIT, not independent validation or a direct comparison with competing products. The source does not establish present-day performance across all systems or operating conditions.
