The clearest camera difference is zoom: Apple specifies one 4x optical telephoto camera plus an 8x “optical-quality” setting, while Samsung specifies dedicated 3x and 5x optical zoom steps, plus 2x and 10x optical-quality settings. For video, Apple lists extensive Dolby Vision and pro-production options; Samsung lists 8K recording at 30 fps. Those specifications describe different capabilities, not which phone makes better-looking footage or photos.
How their zoom systems differ
“Optical,” “optical-quality” and “digital” are not interchangeable labels. Optical zoom refers to the phone’s specified optical camera positions. Optical-quality is the manufacturers’ term for additional zoom settings, while digital zoom can extend farther but should not be treated as equivalent to optical detail.
| Phone | Specified optical zoom | Optical-quality zoom | Digital zoom |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | 4x telephoto at 100 mm; Apple also lists 2x optical zoom out. | 8x telephoto at 200 mm. | Up to 40x. |
| Galaxy S26 Ultra | 3x and 5x. | 2x and 10x, enabled by the Adaptive Pixel sensor. | Up to 100x. |
These are manufacturer specifications: Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max tech specs, Samsung Canada’s Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 launch announcement. Samsung’s 100x figure is a digital-zoom limit, not a claim that it delivers optical-level detail.
What the numbers mean in practice
Samsung lists two dedicated optical steps, 3x and 5x; Apple lists a 4x telephoto. Apple’s 8x setting and Samsung’s 10x setting are explicitly optical-quality, not additional native optical telephoto lenses. The larger label alone does not establish which phone resolves more useful detail: results can depend on subject distance, light, image processing and other capture conditions.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The specifications do not establish how consistently either phone handles intermediate zoom positions or how their images compare under matched conditions. Megapixel counts and zoom labels cannot answer that on their own.
Video: resolution, frame rates and production controls
The most useful distinction is not simply which phone has the largest resolution number. Apple’s listed modes include Dolby Vision and a range of frame rates, alongside formats and controls aimed at production workflows. Samsung’s listed headline resolution is 8K.

| Video capability | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| High-resolution capture | 4K Dolby Vision at 24, 25, 30, 60 and 100 fps on the main camera; Apple also lists 120 fps on the main camera. | UHD 8K (7680 × 4320) at 30 fps. |
| Slow motion | Apple lists 120 fps on the main camera. | Up to 240 fps at FHD and 120 fps at FHD/UHD. |
| Additional video modes | Dolby Vision Cinematic mode up to 4K/60; Dolby Vision Action mode at 2.8K/60. | The cited specification lists UHD 8K/30 and the slow-motion modes above. |
| Production formats and controls | ProRes up to 4K/120 with external recording; ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock support. | These specific formats and controls are not stated in the cited Samsung specification. |
These are vendor-listed recording modes, not matched tests of image quality. Apple’s listed features are relevant if your workflow uses ProRes, Log footage, external recording or camera synchronization. Samsung’s 8K mode may matter if you specifically need to capture at that resolution. Neither set of specifications by itself proves better color, stabilization, autofocus or low-light results.

What published camera comparisons can—and cannot—show
TechRadar reports that its reviewer preferred the Galaxy S26 Ultra for zoom photography and more stylized shots, and preferred the iPhone for wide-camera consistency in the reported well-lit and low-light situations. That is the reviewer’s assessment of their test scenes, not an independent lab result. Crucially, the iPhone tested was the iPhone 18 Pro, not the Pro Max in this comparison.
So that review offers context about one reviewer’s experience, but it is not a conclusive iPhone 18 Pro Max versus Galaxy S26 Ultra test. A fair verdict on image quality would require the exact two models tested in comparable scenes with matched settings and documented firmware. The available manufacturer specifications do not provide that result.

Which specifications matter for your use?
- For reach: Compare the optical steps you expect to use—4x on Apple’s listed telephoto versus Samsung’s 3x and 5x—and keep the separate optical-quality and digital settings in their own categories.
- For high-resolution video: Samsung lists 8K/30; Apple lists multiple 4K Dolby Vision frame rates, including up to 120 fps on the main camera under its stated modes. Choose according to the resolution, frame rate and format your project needs, not the headline number alone.
- For post-production: Apple lists ProRes, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock support, with ProRes up to 4K/120 requiring external recording. Those options matter most when they fit an existing production workflow.
- For everyday image quality: Seek comparisons of the exact models under comparable scenes and settings. The cited reviewer comparison uses the iPhone 18 Pro, so its impressions do not settle the Pro Max matchup.
