You either insert the card into a compatible reader or tap it at a contactless terminal. The term can also be a bank’s branded product name, so context matters.
What makes a credit card “smart”?
In ordinary payment usage, “smart credit card” refers to a card with an embedded chip that follows EMV specifications. EMVCo describes EMV Chip as a set of global technology specifications for contact and contactless payments made with cards and mobile devices. The chip and payment terminal exchange information to process a transaction. EMVCo’s contact-chip overview explains the technology.
How does a smart credit card work at checkout?
Insert or dip the card
For a contact transaction, insert the chip into a compatible terminal and leave it there while the terminal and chip communicate. The terminal processes the payment using that exchange.
Tap to pay
For a contactless transaction, tap the card near a compatible terminal. The card and terminal communicate wirelessly to process the payment. Contactless payment works only when both the card and the terminal support it. EMVCo’s contactless overview describes this method.

What security does the chip provide?
The chip validates the card’s authenticity and generates a one-time security code for each transaction. That code helps reduce counterfeit-card and lost- or stolen-card fraud in card-present transactions; it is a security measure, not a guarantee against fraud. EMVCo’s 2022 explainer reported nearly 12 billion EMV chip cards in use and more than 90% of card-present transactions as EMV Chip-based at that time. Those are 2022 figures, not current 2026 totals. The chip definition concerns in-person chip payments. It does not establish that every online transaction is protected by the chip or that all forms of card fraud are prevented.

Is “Smart Credit Card” a specific bank product?
Sometimes. A bank may use “Smart Credit Card” as the name of a particular product. For example, Standard Chartered has separate Smart Credit Card offerings in Hong Kong and India. Their fees, rewards, eligibility and terms are specific to their markets, not part of the general technology definition. How to tell which meaning applies
- If the discussion is about inserting or tapping a card, “smart credit card” likely means an EMV chip card.
- If the phrase appears as a named offer on a bank’s website or application, it refers to that issuer’s product; check the country and current terms.
