You can keep Freqtrade running without a software subscription if you already have a suitable computer and internet connection. On Linux, a systemd service can monitor the bot using Freqtrade’s sd_notify integration; with Docker, Docker Compose can manage the trading service and restart it after a host reboot. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted trading: the computer, network, exchange, credentials, and strategy can still fail.
For the closest fit to a watchdog-based setup, use native Linux with systemd. Choose Docker Compose if you prefer a containerized deployment and host-reboot recovery. In either case, start in dry-run mode and secure any remote FreqUI access.
What “self-healing” means for Freqtrade
A service manager or container runtime can recover from certain process or host failures. It cannot make a trading setup failure-proof. A restart will not restore power or internet service, fix an exchange outage, renew invalid credentials, correct a broken configuration, or make a strategy profitable.
“For $0” means no software subscription when you reuse a suitable computer and internet connection. It is not a promise of zero total operating cost: hardware, electricity, internet access, exchange fees, and other expenses depend on your circumstances. Buying a small Linux computer or renting a VPS makes the setup no longer literally free.

Install Freqtrade using the current official instructions
Use the current official installation path for your chosen deployment instead of copying commands from an older guide. The stable installation documentation currently lists Python 3.11 or later for its script/manual path. It also says the host clock should be kept synchronized to avoid exchange communication problems. Docker users should follow the official Docker quickstart and use its Compose workflow.

- Choose a deployment. Use a Linux host with systemd if you want Freqtrade’s documented watchdog notifications. Use Docker Compose if you want to run the official container workflow. A screen or tmux session can keep a terminal process alive after logout, but it is not equivalent to a service supervisor.
- Install and configure. Follow the current instructions for the selected method. Set the working directory and command correctly for a native systemd service. For Docker, configure the Compose service and persistent user-data storage.
- Preserve bot data. Keep configuration, logs, and the database on persistent storage, and back up important user data before upgrades or other changes.
- Verify operation in dry-run mode. Set
dry_run: Trueand confirm the bot starts and behaves as expected before considering live trading.
Set up automatic restarts on Linux with systemd
Freqtrade documents a systemd service configuration that uses sd_notify keep-alive messages. When configured as documented, systemd can monitor those notifications and restart the service after covered failures. Follow the current advanced setup instructions for the service example and notification configuration.
- Create the service from Freqtrade’s example. Adjust its working directory and start command to match your installation and chosen configuration.
- Enable the documented notification setting. Configure
internals.sd_notifyor the documented command-line flag as shown in the current guide. - Enable and start the service. Use the service-management steps in the guide, then verify that the service is active and that Freqtrade is producing the expected notifications.
- Keep a user service running after logout, if applicable. Freqtrade notes that a user-level service may require
loginctl enable-lingerso it continues after the user logs out.
This notification mechanism is for a native systemd deployment. Freqtrade explicitly says its sd_notify integration does not work inside a Docker container, so do not expect the systemd watchdog notification setup to supervise a containerized bot.

Run the bot with Docker Compose
For Docker, use Freqtrade’s official Docker quickstart and start the trading service with docker compose up -d. Freqtrade’s quickstart describes this workflow as providing proper service startup and restart after a host reboot. The Compose workflow is not the same as the native systemd sd_notify watchdog.
- Follow the current Docker quickstart. Use its Compose configuration and official image rather than adapting unrelated container instructions.
- Persist the user-data directory. Keep your configuration, database, and logs outside the disposable container layer. The documented user-data directory contains the log and database locations.
- Start the trading service. Run
docker compose up -dfrom the directory containing the Compose configuration. - Inspect service output when diagnosing a problem. Use Compose’s logs and the persistent user-data directory to check what happened before changing configuration or restarting repeatedly.
Compose can help recover the service after a host reboot, but it cannot keep the host powered during an outage or restore a lost network connection.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
Protect remote access to FreqUI
Do not expose FreqUI directly to the public internet without protection. Freqtrade recommends an SSH tunnel or VPN for remote access and notes that the UI does not support HTTPS out of the box. Follow the security guidance in the Docker quickstart before making the interface reachable from another device.

Automatic restarts tell you about process recovery, not trading quality. A process can be running normally while its strategy performs poorly, and a successful backtest does not prove future profitability.

- 【 Support Dual 4Kp60 Display 】Each of the two microHDMI sockets can control a 4K display at 60 Hertz, now support HDR, offering super HD video for media streaming projects. RPi 5 is the first RPi model that comes with a PCI Express port (PCIe 2.0 x1 with 500 MB/s) to attach SSDs (requires separate M.2 HAT).
- 【 Excellent Chips And Applications】Pi 5 is a full-size Pi computer using silicon built in-house at Pi. The RP1 “southbridge” provides the bulk of the I/O capabilities for Pi 5. Pi 5 is more friendly and convenient in the development of Internet of Things, Web development, machine identification, automatic control and other electronic equipment applications and network.
- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
- Backtest the strategy you intend to use. Do not treat Freqtrade’s bundled
SampleStrategyas a ready-made profitable strategy; the Docker quickstart presents it as a demo. - Run dry-run mode. Keep
dry_run: Truewhile checking that configuration, exchange connectivity, and bot behavior are correct without placing live trades. - Review logs and recovery behavior. Confirm that the service or container starts as expected and that you know where to find logs and persistent data.
- Only then decide whether to enable live trading. A watchdog cannot prevent losses or correct a flawed strategy.
When the $0 setup is not practical
The no-subscription path assumes you already have a suitable computer that can remain on and an internet connection. If you need to buy a host, such as a small Linux computer, that purchase makes the setup no longer literally free. A VPS is another option if you cannot leave a local computer running, but it is a paid alternative rather than part of the $0 setup.
