Not yet—not on that evidence alone. A successful payment screen proves only one part of checkout. Before accepting real orders, rehearse the full customer journey and confirm that each order produces the right payment state, totals, inventory changes, shipping and tax results, notifications, and connected-system updates. If a critical path fails, or the payment provider is still in test mode, hold the launch.

What a successful checkout test does—and does not—prove

A checkout can appear to work while leaving an order in the wrong status, charging an unexpected total, failing to reserve inventory, omitting a shipping option, or never sending a confirmation email. Shopify’s launch and test-order guidance recommends checking checkout, order processing, inventory, shipping, taxes, and notifications—not merely whether a payment appears to succeed. See Shopify’s store launch checklist and Shopify’s test-order guidance.

Platform instructions are useful starting points, but the exact setup varies by platform, payment provider, country, and store configuration. A test is evidence about the scenario you ran; it does not certify every possible order path, legal compliance, security, uptime, or conversion performance.

Rehearse the store’s actual customer journeys

List the material ways customers can buy from this store, then test representative examples. Include every payment method and product or fulfillment type that materially changes the flow. Shopify Plus and WooCommerce launch guidance cover checkout scenarios, integrations, mobile use, and other checks that help turn this into a store-specific rehearsal. See Shopify Plus’s go-live guide and WooCommerce’s launch checklist.

Cover cart and checkout variations

  • Add an item, remove it, and change its quantity; confirm the cart and final order reflect each change.
  • Try guest checkout and account checkout if both are offered.
  • Test a valid discount and an invalid or expired one. Confirm that the displayed error is understandable and the total is correct.
  • Try a gift card if the store accepts one, including a partial balance if that is a supported scenario.
  • Use representative product variations, such as different sizes or options. Include physical, digital, or subscription products where the store sells them.

Check payment success and failure

Use the provider’s sandbox or the platform’s supported payment test mode to simulate an approved payment and a declined one. Confirm the success path reaches the expected confirmation and order status; on failure, check that the customer gets a clear message and that the store does not treat an unpaid order as paid. Shopify documents test transaction options in its payment-gateway test-mode instructions, while WooCommerce explains gateway sandbox testing in its testing orders guide.

A live transaction can be another way to validate a real processor, but it may incur fees or other provider-specific side effects. Understand the provider’s instructions first, then cancel or refund promptly as appropriate; Shopify describes the test-order and real-order options in its test-order guidance and processing test orders guide.

Use representative addresses and delivery choices

Test customer addresses that exercise the store’s relevant shipping zones and tax rules. Check that available shipping methods, rates, delivery details, and taxes match the store’s intended configuration. If a physical item and a digital item follow different fulfillment or tax paths, test each relevant path rather than assuming one result covers both.

Verify what happens after the customer pays

For each key scenario, inspect both the customer-facing result and the store’s operational records. Confirm the admin order has the expected status and line items, inventory changed as intended, and the correct shipping and tax details appear. Check confirmation emails and any connected fulfillment, inventory, tax, analytics, or marketing systems that the store relies on. Shopify’s test-order instructions specifically include order processing and related store behavior; WooCommerce’s migration checklist also emphasizes functional, integration, accessibility, browser, and real-device testing. See WooCommerce’s ecommerce migration guide.

Test on a phone and check basic accessibility

Run the checkout on a real iOS or Android phone that is available to you, as well as on the browsers your store supports. A desktop preview cannot show every touch, keyboard, screen-size, or browser issue. WooCommerce recommends real-device mobile testing and accessibility checks in its migration checklist and launch checklist.

  • Navigate the checkout using a keyboard, including moving between fields and activating controls.
  • Check that form fields have clear labels, errors identify what needs correction, and text and controls remain readable.
  • Check that buttons and other touch targets are usable on the phone, and that the order can be completed without awkward horizontal scrolling or hidden controls.
  • Where possible, check screen-reader compatibility and sufficient contrast; do not rely on color alone to communicate an error or status.

Keep test mode separate from launch mode

Sandbox transactions let you exercise payment flows without charging a customer, but a provider left in test mode may block real card orders. Shopify explicitly warns that live card orders cannot be accepted while a payment gateway is in test mode. Before opening the storefront to customers, verify that the intended production provider is enabled and test mode is off. See Shopify’s payment gateway test-mode instructions.

Do not treat staging and production as interchangeable. WooCommerce recommends testing orders in a safe setup, including staging where appropriate, while the live store still needs a final check of its actual provider and public configuration. The WooCommerce testing orders guide covers test-order handling and sandbox use.

Use a launch checklist and record failures

A concise issue log makes a rehearsal actionable. For each scenario, record the expected result, what actually happened, who owns any fix, and whether the scenario passed on retest. This is an operational way to apply the scenario and integration checks in Shopify’s go-live guide and WooCommerce’s migration checklist.

  1. Set the test scope: list the products, customer types, payment methods, addresses, discounts, delivery choices, and devices that represent the store’s actual offer.
  2. Run the customer flows: test cart changes, guest or account checkout, discounts or gift cards, and both approved and declined payments in a safe test setup.
  3. Audit the resulting order: compare the total and tax, shipping selection, order status, inventory, confirmation page and email, and connected system updates with the expected result.
  4. Check the experience: repeat the relevant flows on a real phone and supported browsers; check keyboard navigation, field labels, readable errors, and touch controls.
  5. Verify launch configuration: check the production payment provider, test-mode setting, public access, domain and redirects, and relevant backups and monitoring. Review connected apps, analytics, and other integrations that matter to the store.
  6. Resolve and retest: assign each critical failure to an owner, correct it, and repeat the affected scenario before launch.

For security and compliance, checkout testing is not a substitute for a store-specific assessment. PCI requirements depend in part on how cardholder data is handled; consult the payment provider and applicable compliance guidance for the actual payment flow. WooCommerce’s PCI-DSS overview, updated June 6, 2025, summarizes scope considerations but is not a compliance determination.

Make the go/no-go decision

Go when every material customer and payment path offered by the store behaves as intended; order totals, tax, shipping, inventory, notifications, and important integrations are correct; the relevant mobile and accessibility checks pass; and the production configuration is ready.

Hold if a payment path fails, the amount or tax is wrong, an important connected system loses or mishandles an order, customers cannot complete checkout on a supported device, or test mode remains active. Fix the issue and repeat the affected scenario. There is no universal pass percentage or required number of test orders in the platform guidance; the gate is whether the store’s real, material paths have been validated.
