You can work with a local Obsidian vault using a terminal-based agent, an agent panel inside Obsidian, or an integration that exposes vault functions to an external agent. The right choice depends on where you want to work, how you provide note context, and how much control you need over file and command access—not on a proven performance ranking. The product materials available for these options describe workflows, not comparable task-quality results.
Three ways to connect an AI agent to your vault
These approaches differ chiefly in where the agent interface lives and how it receives access to your notes. “Local vault” describes where the files are stored; it does not, by itself, establish where a model processes information.
| Workflow | Examples | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run an agent CLI from the vault directory | Codex CLI; runtimes configured in Any AI CLI | A terminal agent can inspect and edit files in its working directory and run local tools. Any AI CLI describes a PTY-backed terminal in Obsidian’s sidebar that starts in the active vault folder. | Installation and sign-in requirements, permissions, how note context is selected, and how to review or undo edits. |
| Use an agent panel in Obsidian | Copilot; Grimoire | Keep a conversation interface alongside notes. Copilot describes multi-step work, note inspection and creation, and permissions. Grimoire describes a shared model picker and references to notes, folders, and MCP tools. | Current agent support, desktop or mobile limits, whether a CLI must be installed, account requirements, and how data is routed. |
| Connect an external agent to vault operations | Nexus | Nexus describes native chat and connections for external agents, including MCP and a local CLI for some shell agents. | Setup complexity, accessible files and actions, required permissions, and current support in the client you use. |
Run an agent CLI from the vault folder
This is the most direct option if you are comfortable with a terminal and want an agent to work against the vault’s local files. OpenAI’s Codex CLI guide describes inspecting files, editing them, running local tools, and controlling permissions from a terminal. Its guidance also recommends Git checkpoints around a task. Read the Codex CLI guide.
Working directory and note context are related but not identical. Starting a CLI in the vault folder gives it a project location; it does not necessarily tell it which note or passage matters. Any AI CLI describes opening in the active vault folder and inserting the active file or folder path, which can make the intended context clearer. Check how your chosen CLI handles permissions and whether it reads only the context you provide or can access more of the working tree.

Keep the agent interface inside Obsidian
Copilot
The Copilot listing describes support for OpenCode, Claude Code, and Codex, along with multi-step work, tool use, file creation, and permissions. It also describes provider keys, local models, and agent-specific logins. These are product-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every configuration or model is available on every platform; check the current listing and setup instructions before choosing it. View the Copilot Obsidian listing.
Grimoire
Grimoire describes a local CLI runtime with no hosted backend, a shared model picker, and the ability to refer to notes and folders or use MCP tools. Its description can help explain where the plugin’s runtime sits, but it does not establish the data path for every model request. Confirm provider processing and retention terms for the model you select. View the Grimoire Obsidian listing.

Pass the right note context
Plugins differ in how they connect a conversation to your vault. Any AI CLI can insert the active file or folder path; Grimoire describes mentioning notes and folders; Copilot describes note inspection and creation. Before a larger task, identify the relevant note or folder explicitly and check what the plugin says it can read or change. View the Any AI CLI Obsidian listing.
Connect an external agent to vault operations
Nexus describes native chat as well as access for external agents through MCP or a local CLI for some shell agents. This approach may suit someone who wants to keep using an agent in its own client while connecting it to vault functions. The added connection is also a setup and permission boundary to understand: check which files and actions are exposed, what authorization is required, and whether your specific client is supported. Choose based on workflow, not an unsupported winner
- Choose a CLI in the vault directory if you prefer terminal work and want the agent operating on the local working tree. Confirm installation, authentication, permissions, and how you will review changes.
- Choose an Obsidian panel if keeping the conversation beside your notes matters more than using a separate terminal or agent client. Compare context controls, supported agents, platform coverage, and setup requirements.
- Choose an external-agent integration if you already work in another agent client and want it to call vault operations. Evaluate the extra connection setup and its precise access scope.
Across all three, compare where the interface runs, how you supply the active note or relevant folder, which read/write and command permissions you can control, agent and provider choices, session continuity, platform support, and your preferred review and recovery workflow. The cited product descriptions do not establish a controlled comparison of output quality, and they do not provide a reliable basis for ranking these options by performance or price.
Protect notes and keep changes recoverable
A local runtime and a local model are separate questions. A tool can run on your computer while sending prompt context to a cloud model. The plugin descriptions do not establish the data handling of every provider or configuration. Before sending sensitive note contents, check the current privacy and retention terms for the provider and model you plan to use. Limit access to the intended vault and review proposed changes before keeping them.

For file recovery, OpenAI’s Codex CLI guide recommends Git checkpoints before and after a task. That practice gives you a way to inspect and revert changes; use a recovery method you understand before allowing an agent to make broad edits.
