The available reporting documents the ransomware group’s allegation, not a verified theft: it does not establish that the drawings were authentic, that Maximum Industries’ systems were encrypted, or that SpaceX’s own systems were accessed.
What did LockBit claim?
SecurityWeek reported on March 14, 2023, that LockBit said it had breached Maximum Industries’ systems and found roughly 3,000 drawings it described as “certified by space-x engineers.” The group said it planned to auction the alleged files. The CyberWire repeated the allegation the next day and quoted LockBit’s announcement: “We will launch the auction in a week.” That was a stated threat, not evidence that an auction later took place.
The number, description, and planned auction all came from LockBit. They should not be treated as an independently verified inventory or as proof of what the files contained.
Who was Maximum Industries?
SecurityWeek described Maximum Industries as a Texas-based piece-part production company specializing in waterjet and laser cutting and CNC machining, and as a contract manufacturing facility. LockBit alleged that SpaceX used the company’s services. That allegation does not establish what information Maximum Industries held or whether any particular files belonged to SpaceX.

Was SpaceX breached?
The reporting concerns LockBit’s claim about Maximum Industries’ systems. It does not establish that attackers accessed SpaceX’s own systems. A contractor’s alleged possession of client-related material and a confirmed compromise of the client’s network are separate claims; the available accounts do not verify either the alleged theft or a SpaceX system intrusion.
What is confirmed—and what remains unverified?
SecurityWeek reported that it had sought comment from SpaceX and Maximum Industries and that neither had responded by the time that article was published. That is a statement about the status of its inquiry at publication, not evidence about whether either company commented later.

A SafeMode Space incident record, with a scope assessment recorded August 23, 2026, characterizes the event as an unverified claim. It says its cited sources do not independently verify the drawings, confirm encryption of Maximum Industries’ systems, or establish that the threatened auction occurred. Those sources also do not report an effect on SpaceX operations, launches, or spacecraft. This describes what those sources establish; it is not proof that no later statement or record exists.

- Not established by the cited reporting: Whether the alleged files were authentic, whether the reported count was accurate, whether ransomware encryption occurred, or whether the auction went ahead.

Why the distinction matters
Ransomware groups may exaggerate an attack’s impact or the value of alleged stolen data, a caution SecurityWeek included in its contemporaneous report. An attacker’s announcement can be newsworthy without serving as independent confirmation. In this case, the reported “roughly 3,000” figure and the description of the drawings trace back to LockBit’s claim; the reporting cited here does not authenticate them.
