That was not necessarily a complete public list of 26 vulnerabilities: Google presented highlights of externally contributed fixes and said some bug details could remain restricted. Chrome 116 then received a later security update for a critical WebP flaw, CVE-2023-4863.
What did Google announce on August 15, 2023?
Google announced Chrome Stable and Extended Stable 116.0.5845.96 for Mac and Linux, and 116.0.5845.96/.97 for Windows. The rollout was expected to take place over the coming days or weeks. The announcement said, “This update includes 26 security fixes.” Google Chrome Releases, August 15, 2023.
The headline phrase “26 vulnerabilities” is a useful shorthand, but Google’s wording was “26 security fixes.” The release note highlighted fixes contributed by external researchers; it did not promise a publicly itemized list of all 26. Google said details and links for bugs could remain restricted until most users had updated, or while a third-party library dependency remained unfixed. As a result, the public announcement should not be read as a complete catalogue of 26 individually identified CVEs.
