The NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchip, or GH200, is a module that combines an NVIDIA Grace CPU and a Hopper GPU, linked by the coherent NVLink-C2C interconnect. “Hopper” is the GPU architecture; H100 is a GPU built on that architecture, not the complete Grace Hopper module.
What does “Grace Hopper chip” mean?
In most cases, “Grace Hopper chip” refers to NVIDIA’s Grace Hopper Superchip: a CPU-GPU accelerated-computing module. It brings together a Grace central processing unit (CPU) and a Hopper graphics processing unit (GPU) so they can work closely on computing tasks. NVIDIA describes the connection between them as NVLink-C2C, a coherent chip-to-chip interconnect. NVIDIA’s Grace Hopper overview describes the platform and its design.
The name can be confusing because “Grace Hopper” and “Hopper” refer to different things. Grace Hopper is the combined platform; Hopper is the GPU architecture inside it. NVIDIA named that architecture in honor of computer scientist Grace Hopper. Its announcement introduced the H100 as the first Hopper-based GPU and described Grace Hopper separately as an integrated CPU-GPU module. NVIDIA’s March 22, 2022 announcement
How do Grace, Hopper and NVLink-C2C fit together?
Grace CPU
The Grace CPU handles general-purpose processing. NVIDIA’s architecture description pairs it with CPU-side LPDDR5X memory.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Hopper GPU
The Hopper GPU accelerates parallel workloads and has its own GPU-side HBM3 memory in NVIDIA’s described architecture. H100 is a product based on Hopper; it is not another name for the GH200 CPU-GPU module.
NVLink-C2C connection
NVLink-C2C links the CPU and GPU and supports memory coherency: in NVIDIA’s programming-model description, CPU and GPU threads can access both memory pools without explicit data movement. NVIDIA states a maximum total NVLink-C2C bandwidth of up to 900 GB/s for the Grace Hopper architecture. That is a vendor-stated interface figure, not a promise of application performance; results depend on the workload and system configuration. NVIDIA’s Grace Hopper architecture explanation

Is Grace Hopper the same as an H100?
No. H100 is a Hopper GPU product. GH200 combines a Grace CPU with a Hopper GPU. In practical terms, an H100-only configuration is GPU hardware, while Grace Hopper is a CPU-GPU module designed for close communication between those processors. A server or rack built around GH200 is a larger system, not the chip itself.
| Name | What it refers to | Distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Hopper | NVIDIA GPU architecture | The architecture used by H100 and the GPU component of Grace Hopper. |
| H100 | A Hopper-based GPU product | A GPU, not the Grace CPU-GPU module. |
| Grace Hopper (GH200) | A CPU-GPU superchip module | Combines a Grace CPU and a Hopper GPU using NVLink-C2C. |
What is GH100, and how do its specifications relate to H100?
GH100 is NVIDIA’s full-GPU implementation of Hopper, while H100 SXM5 and H100 PCIe are specific product configurations. NVIDIA’s figures illustrate why it matters to name the design or product when quoting specifications:

What is Grace Hopper designed for?
NVIDIA positions Grace Hopper for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC), particularly workloads that handle large datasets or benefit from frequent CPU-GPU data exchange. Combining CPU-side LPDDR5X memory, GPU-side HBM3 memory and a coherent high-bandwidth connection is intended to help those processors work together. This describes the vendor’s design goal, not an independent benchmark result: actual performance depends on the application and the particular system.

Who was Grace Hopper?
Grace Hopper was a pioneering U.S. computer scientist. NVIDIA says the Hopper architecture was named in her honor. The name does not mean she designed the modern chip; NVIDIA’s announcement credits the name to the company’s choice of tribute.
