A software media server is an application that runs on a network-connected computer or other supported host, organizes media files, and makes them available to client apps on devices such as TVs, phones, tablets, and computers. It lets you manage a personal media library in one place and access it from multiple devices; it does not necessarily provide the movies or music itself.
How does a software media server work?
A media server setup has two main parts: the server software and the client apps. The server runs on a host that can access your media files. You point it to folders or libraries, and it catalogs the collection and may display associated information. A client app connects to the server to browse the library and request playback.
- Choose a host: Install the server software on a supported computer or another compatible device.
- Make media available: Store your files where the server host can access them and select the relevant folders or libraries in the server software.
- Connect a client: Open a compatible client app on a TV, phone, tablet, computer, or other supported device and connect it to the server.
- Browse and play: The client requests library information and playback from the server. If the client cannot play a file’s format, some server software can convert it to a format the client supports.
Conversion is not always needed, and support depends on the server, client, media format, and host. It is not a guarantee that every server can convert every file on every device.
What can host the server?
A server is software, not necessarily a dedicated appliance. Plex lists computers, compatible NAS devices, and NVIDIA SHIELD among possible hosts. Emby also describes running its server on a computer or NAS. A NAS for a media server is therefore an option, not a requirement; check compatibility for the particular software and device before choosing one.

How is a media server different from a streaming service?
In a typical personal-media setup, the server organizes and streams files you make available; it is not automatically a subscription that supplies a catalog of movies or shows. Emby explicitly says its product does not provide movies or TV shows. Plex offers separate content, including Movies & Shows, live TV, and music, alongside its personal-library server. Keep that provider-supplied content distinct from media in your own library.

These examples differ in licensing and paid-feature models, host and client support, library organization, format compatibility, and remote-access setup. Compare the details for your own devices, files, and priorities rather than assuming one product is best for everyone.

What to check before choosing one
- Host compatibility: Confirm that the server software supports the computer, NAS, or other host you plan to use.
- Client availability: Check for an app or supported playback method on each device where you want to watch or listen.
- File compatibility: Consider whether your clients can play your media formats directly and whether the server can convert formats when needed.
- Library management: Compare how products organize files and display associated information.
- Licensing and features: Check which capabilities are included and whether any require payment; these arrangements are not identical across products.
- Remote access: Access outside your local network may be possible, but it depends on product setup and network configuration.
Some capabilities can also change by release. For example, Jellyfin’s documentation says DLNA support moved to a first-party plugin and is not included in the base installation starting with Jellyfin 10.9. Check the current installation documentation if DLNA support matters to your setup.
