In a real application, an hCaptcha challenge “works” only if the server verifies the resulting token and makes that verification a condition of the protected action. A successful-looking widget or browser callback is not authorization: the backend must send the token to hCaptcha’s siteverify endpoint, validate the response, and reject failures.
How hCaptcha fits into an application request
- Render the widget. The page loads hCaptcha’s client SDK and renders a widget with the public sitekey.
- Send the token with the user’s request. After a successful challenge, the browser receives an
h-captcha-responsetoken. Include it with the form submission or asynchronous request. - Verify on the server. The application sends a URL-encoded POST to https://api.hcaptcha.com/siteverify with the token and the hCaptcha account secret. hCaptcha recommends also sending the expected sitekey so a token issued for one sitekey cannot be redeemed against another. See the hCaptcha Developer Guide.
- Gate the action. Allow the protected action only when verification returns
success: true. Treat missing tokens, unsuccessful results, API or HTTP errors, response parsing failures, and timeouts as failed verification. Give the user a retry path that obtains a new token.
As hCaptcha puts it, “A frontend callback alone does not authorize the request.”
What determines whether verification works
The backend controls authorization
A browser token is evidence for the server to verify, not a decision the client can be trusted to make. If the application proceeds based only on the widget callback, a client-side change or a request that bypasses the page may avoid the intended check.
The sitekey, secret, and token must match
Use the secret associated with the hCaptcha account and site configuration that issued the token. Keep that secret on the server; do not put it in browser code. A sitekey/secret mismatch can cause verification to fail. Send the expected sitekey as part of verification where supported by the integration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Tokens are single-use and must be checked shortly after issuance. Once a token has been submitted for verification, expires, or fails, obtain a fresh one instead of replaying it.
The verification request must use the expected format
Send a POST with application/x-www-form-urlencoded fields, not JSON and not a GET query string. A standard HTTP library or JavaScript’s URLSearchParams can encode the body. The request needs the token and server-held secret; include the expected sitekey and, where appropriate, a trusted user IP.

Failures must reject the protected action
Make the application’s behavior explicit for timeouts, network exceptions, non-OK responses, missing credentials, malformed responses, and unsuccessful verification: do not proceed. The hCaptcha Node.js guide follows this fail-closed approach in its example. Show a recoverable error and let the user complete a fresh challenge after the issue is resolved.
IP metadata must come from a trusted source
hCaptcha recommends passing remoteip, which may improve verification accuracy. Only pass an address obtained through a trusted network or proxy configuration. Do not treat arbitrary client-supplied forwarded headers as the user’s IP.

Debug a failed integration
- Confirm the backend receives the token under the expected
h-captcha-responsefield name. - Confirm the server calls the official siteverify endpoint using a URL-encoded POST body with the token and server-held secret.
- Check that the secret belongs to the site configuration that issued the token and that verification includes the expected sitekey.
- Inspect the returned
successvalue and relevant error codes, hostname, and timestamp for the integration. - Look for missing, malformed, expired, reused, or mismatched tokens and credentials.
- Verify that timeouts, request exceptions, non-OK responses, and malformed responses all reject the protected action.
- In asynchronous React or Vue flows, clear token state on expiration or error and reset the component after each submission attempt. Request a new token before retrying.
- In test environments, use only hCaptcha’s matching test sitekey and secret. The test keys provide no anti-bot protection and must not be deployed as production protection. Test both successful verification and rejection, including with a nonsense token.
- If you send
remoteip, confirm the address comes through a trusted proxy configuration rather than an untrusted request header.
Choose the mode that matches your decision logic
| Mode | What the user sees | What the application must do | Availability or qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard checkbox flow | A checkbox and, when required, a visible challenge. | Verify the returned token on the backend before allowing the action. | Follow the integration and verification requirements in the Developer Guide. |
| Invisible | No checkbox; hCaptcha may still show a challenge according to its criteria. | Verify the token on the backend as in other client-side flows. | hCaptcha’s Invisible Captcha documentation states a goal of keeping visible challenges below 0.1% of users in the described mode. This is a vendor-stated goal, not an independently established result for every deployment. |
| Passive | A checkbox may be shown, but not a visible challenge. | Consume Enterprise risk scores and make the application’s decision from them. | Available to Enterprise customers. hCaptcha describes its scores as ranging from 0.0 (no risk) to 1.0 (confirmed threat); that is a scale description, not a population statistic. |
Invisible and passive are not interchangeable: invisible hides the checkbox but can still present a challenge, while passive relies on Enterprise risk-score handling and avoids visible challenges. Do not assume a widget setting alone changes the server’s authorization requirements.
Account for score direction when migrating
If you are moving decision logic from reCAPTCHA to hCaptcha Enterprise, review the thresholds rather than copying them unchanged. hCaptcha documents a score direction of 0.0 for no risk and 1.0 for confirmed threat in its migration guide. A system that interprets higher scores as safer could therefore make the wrong decision if its existing logic is carried over without adjustment.

When client-side coverage is not practical
For systems that cannot add a client-side integration to every relevant request, hCaptcha’s Enterprise overview describes Backend API Protection as a server-to-server analysis option using metadata available to the backend. Evaluate whether that coverage fits the request paths you need to protect, what signals and risk outputs the application can consume, how much user interruption is acceptable, and how sitekeys and credentials will be managed. Do not assume this option has the same integration behavior or outputs as a client-side widget.
