A shared design palette can keep multiple apps aligned, but the architecture is not simply “import everything everywhere.” Three consumers may import a common token source while a fourth keeps a copy; that copied version needs an explicit owner and update policy. The available evidence does not identify the consumers or explain why one retains a copy, so its purpose should not be assumed.
Why share a design palette?
As a design system expands across teams and platforms, a shared token source can give colors and other design decisions a common definition. Figma notes that one color token may need to become a Swift resource, an Android resource, or a CSS custom property, depending on the target. Hand-copying values between codebases risks drift, while contributors working without common rules can create duplicate tokens or use the same token name for different meanings. Figma’s design-token architecture guidance describes these scaling concerns.
A palette value and a design token are not quite the same thing. A raw value records a color; a semantic token gives that value a reusable role, such as the color assigned to a particular interface purpose. Dell Design System recommends token-based configurations and variants rather than ad hoc custom CSS, reinforcing the value of stable, meaningful names. See Dell’s guidance on tokens.
How importing consumers can use the shared source
Importing a common palette does not require every consumer to share all of its theme behavior. Microsoft FAST documents a CSS-only design-system package in which apps import tokens.css at startup and component styles use CSS custom properties. The consuming app controls theme switching by setting or removing an attribute on the document’s <html> element. This is one documented implementation pattern, not evidence that the unnamed consumers in this architecture use FAST or CSS. The example is described in FAST’s examples documentation.

That separation can be useful: a shared package supplies common token definitions, while each consumer remains responsible for how its own themes behave. For a multi-platform system, the shared source may also need platform-specific output rather than a single file that every target can use unchanged.
What a deliberate copy needs to make explicit
A consumer retaining a copy creates a governance boundary. The copy could be a source file, generated output, or only selected values; those choices affect how it can be updated and compared. The available evidence does not establish which consumer keeps the copy, what is copied, or whether the arrangement is temporary or permanent.

Before describing the copy as a deliberate architectural choice, establish these details with the project owner:
- Ownership: Which consumer holds the copy, and who is accountable for its contents?
- Scope: Is the copied artifact a complete palette, a source file, generated output, or a subset of tokens?
- Change flow: Who approves changes to the canonical palette, and how does the copied version receive—or intentionally decline—those updates?
- Divergence: Which differences are allowed, and what signals that the copy is out of date?
- Duration: Is the copy a migration step or a supported long-term boundary?
Independent release timing, runtime isolation, platform-specific transformation, or a separate brand might explain such a choice, but none is established for this case. Treat each as a question to verify, not as the rationale.

How to evaluate the arrangement
Compare the consumers by the responsibilities they actually own, rather than assuming every consumer should work identically. A practical review should record:
- Who owns the source of truth and approves token changes.
- How each importing consumer obtains the palette and what build or transformation step produces its target format.
- Which layer owns theme switching and other theme behavior.
- How copied values are reviewed against the canonical source and how divergence is detected.
- Whether the copy is an accepted boundary or unresolved migration debt.
The architecture is only clear when the import path and the exception are both documented. Without a confirmed owner, update path, and expected divergence, the copy’s intent cannot be inferred from the fact that it exists.
